reverse lights not working (not the fuse)

ok. i checked the fuse and replaced it and its fine. if i put my car into reverse, the back up lights dont turn on. however they did go on sometimes depending how hard i put it into reverse. is there a switch or something next to the shiftter that activates the lights when the car is put into reverse? how do i fix this?

The switch is located on the transmission.
right on top near the cables.

I would suggest pulling the connector and pumping 12 volts onto the wires and see if they light up.

if so, then the switch might bebad., i think it screws out.
