whenever i have the clutch in and go to put the car into first gear right after it has been moving it grinds. what is that? bad synchros?

Its a good guess, if you have the clutch bled and adjusted correctly. It also may be your pedal assembly, they are known to go out on 1gs.

They will be soon with that kind of treatment. The gears are still "coasting" inside the box, and there's a fair bit of weight you're asking a small bit of brake to get to stop. Get in the habit of "snubbing" against second before slipping into first, its synchro is stronger and will more effectively stop the cluster's spinning. Changing out your transmission fluid with BG, Pennzoil Synchromesh or Redline is also recommended, as their friction modifiers allow the synchros to work more effectively.
And _never_ try for first if the car's moving at all, second can deal with those low speeds almost as well.
