re: tiny metal shavings in lower ic pipe

hello there, a friend of mine has a 91 tsi awd and we were changing his ic pipe and noticed metal shavings and a little oil in his lower ic pipe. as well, his car smokes out the exaust when sitting at stop lights for a little bit. wondering if the oil is getting through the exaust through the turbo, or bad rings, whatever and also if the metal is normal cause it was just a little and the blades of the turbo look decent and just a tick of shaft play too. thanks, charles

My old turbo had shaft play that got worse and worse over time and i found the same little shavings. I figured it was the fins chipping off.

right,
either the fins grinding, or the compressor housing is getting worn by the blades.

Yeah, i figured something was wrong, either wrong, or maybe normal, they were tiny shavings, after all. well, my friend got pulled over today by a stater cause his car smoked so bad. its got neww 8mm accel wires, new ngk plugs, new fuel filter, but idles almost as if its wanting to die, i mean, even at 750 rpms, it sounds and shakes almost like its running at 450rpms and even though it still boosts to 15 psi on his blitz guage, its got the power of a civic at best when it used to throw us both back in th e seat a little. it smokes soooo bad (blueish, oil type smoke), especially when he shifts it shoots a cloud of it out then!! i dont know whats wrong, but do you think its the turbo? we pulled the intake off the turbo and checked the blades. they spin freely, very freely. i hope its the turbo anyways though cause that sucker is way easier than rebuilding the engine!!!

Do a compression test to see where you stand...that will tell you if its motor or not...do both a wet test and a dry test...just to see where you stand and then go from there...
