What are the symptons of a bad water pump? Also, how do you know your power steering needs to be replaced or filled with ps fluid?

"weeping" from the weep hole at the Water pump shaft - unfortunately all that is behind the plastic Timing belt cover - & if leaking would then be sprayed all over the inside of the cover - & then too may only leak at high rpm & not idle - the other symptom of a bad water pump would be a lack of circulation noted at the the Thermo cap, you don't hear of that much...

Well if it needs fluid it's leaking - P/S fluid doesn't just evaporate or dissappear into hyperspace - replace ALL the seals with the Mitsu P/S seal kit - very inexpensive - mind you if you've ran it to 5K rpm's all weekend w/ no P/S Fluid & horsed the steering wheel around somehow with your massive biceps then you may well have cooked the P/S pump altogether - BTW - if your P/S pump is dumping fluid on your alternator you'll soon be buying an alternator & if you don't soon buy the alternator you may well be buying an ECU. All this is well documented on the boards - welcome to the wonderful world of leak chasing...

Sometimes when water pumps start to go you'll hear a grinding sound coming from the pump. That means the bearings are shot. To check that, take the belts off the pump pulley and try to wiggle the pulley. If it moves, even a little, the pump is no good.
