ok i bought a 91 eclipse 2.0L for $200. the only thing wrong is that it wont start. the person that i bought it from took off an alarm and it wouldnt start at all. there were some wires loose that we connected back. now when we turn the key all we here is a click. the starter that was on it was broken but it worked but it wouldnt bolt up right so we tried putting on a starter from my 1.8L engine but it still wont turn on. any ideas you guys might have on what could be wrong???

First we need to know if you heard the engine run _before_ the previous owner pulled the alarm.

You must have a manual to sort some of this out. You can hook up a remote starter wire. Battery grounds to engine and body. Positive terminal to starter, remove single small wire to selenoid, substitute your wire. Observing all safety procedures. With the key off touch your wire to positive battery terminal, engine _will_ crank. If it does not then you have a starter, or bad battery or cables. If it does crank, then turn the key on you should hear the fuel pump run for a second or so and then stop, again using your remote starter wire crank engine, should start. If not then you need to establish you have the key elements, valve timing, fuel pressure and spark. All 3 must be present, if fail on any element fix the problem.

See how simple cars are??? hehehe

GTM

the previous owner told me that he drove the car a few times a few days before he sold it to me. and this guy is my brothers friend so i dont think he would be lying to us. but ill try what you said. if it dont work ill buy a new starter and battery. thanks for the advice.

when you go to crank the engine, can you just bump it once with intake manifold off and intercooling hoses off and some coolant lines. Just to see if it even does anything, because mines not doing anything and i'm not trying to put it all togather then check and take it all off to just put it togather again for nothing.

Although what GTM said was very helpful and can be a part of your problem with your car not starting, I think the first thing to do before you go too deep into it, is that you mentioned that your starter wont bolt up right to the engine.

If so, when the solenoid trys to kick out and hit the flywheel to start your car, it may not be moving at all if it is not aligned properly therefore it wont crank the engine at all, and thats when you will get the clicking noise.

I would sugest you get the starter bolted up correctly and make sure that there are no stripped threads or else your car will not start, and if you get lucky enough to get it going once, it may not start the second time around.

Starters produce very high torque when starting the car,and if its not bolted up correctly, your going to have problems.

Do what GTM said and make sure you hear the fuel pump go on. If you dont feel safe jumping your starter by the battery directly, take out the starter and go to a repair shop to have it bench tested. That will tell you if the starter is working or not and if the silenoid it engaging properly.

Good Luck. You'll get it!!

I suspect it's going to be more than that. Check the timing belts, pull the spark plugs and turn the engine over by rolling it in gear (to make sure it even does), get a new battery and work on getting a compression reading off it. Then worry about getting fuel and spark to it.
