Hey everyone...got a very weird problem

I start up my car.....idle is fine...if i rev it up it revs ok.....once it gets warm though im getting a choppy idle and back fires  ....that sometimes disapear.... thought it was my o2 sensor..had it checked and it was ok...checked ignition seems to be ok (well not the spark plugs...its weird its ok when engine is cold)....did do a wideband o2 test came out high co/hidrocarbon.., oh yah and sometimes it goes away for about 30 seconds till i slow down to idle while stoped and it comes back

this is on the 2g auto 96 no changes
Annyone else know what it could be??

Nope, only guessing. Afterfire is an explosion in the exhaust which you and about half the world are calling backfire. Whatever... an explosion in the exhaust is usually caused by an air leak in the exhaust system which allows the unburned gasses to burn with explosive forces. Sometimes they can occur on the valve overlap and force flame or sparks into the intake manifold where they will ignite the fuel in another cylinder. Check your exhaust for leaks and broken bolts/studs. You can have a friend press a rag up against the exhaust end while you listen for gasses leaking from manifold and other joints in the exhaust system.

That doen's explain why you _didn't_ change the plugs... any reason why not?

Yah i got new plugs but havent goten arround to do it....my car is allways too hot to change the plugs :p dont wana torque my head while its hot.....and dog gonit someone stole my gaper...time to buy el cheepo gaper from Pepboys

i mean its weird...i checked all vacum hoses, had the codes pulled (course my check engine is on cause of egr solenoid being out...been like that for 2 years never given me trouble )

but i was told that either spark plugs work or they dead...not dead after warm up.....might be they fouled up ? (high hc?)

I'm afraid the days of using a pop top soda can for a gapper are gone. And the ones that are in there were un gapped also??
...............

Let me guess, the person who told you spark plugs don't misbehave from cold to hot was a professional mechanic??

Have you check here for plug suggestions with your mods??

Ok on that, the EGR disconnect caught my eye so though to make mention. But you have added a turbo yes? I'd put new plugs in there and save those as emergency spares.

If using NGK which seem to work well, you must gap them for they are pre gapped for other applications. Use the lower end of gap settings as I recall on my son's car it made a difference. If you are running a turbo in what was a non turbo car I can't advise other than finding what others have done before you.

Let us know if that fixes the problem, bugs the heck out of me not knowing if I've hit the nail on the head or not.

Cheers,
GTM

That's great! There are a few of us old time pros lurking around here too. I'll speak for myself only in giving reasons why. Some of it is altruism, some is the mental challenge to keep the senses accute coupled with reading between the lines without the patient in front.

Could you see any obvious differences between each plug? Keep the good ones for emergency spares, knock the porcelain out of one for use as a future tool. Thanks for letting us know the outcome.

You're welcome.

Cheers,
GTM
