Alright I have been getting a little lifter tick on startups but it would go away after about 2minutes of idleing.I put a 255lp walbro in the car saturday.Well saturday night I went out and raised some hell. After about the third hard pulled on the interstate, the car started to miss under acceleration.Sunday I went and got some new plugs (BPR7ES).After I installed them I noticed a constant tick noise at about 3500 rpm.I pulled the valve cover and pulled the lifters out.6 out of 16 were stuck in the extended position and 10 were moving freely.I got the 6 that were stuck to move but not real free.I reinstalled the lifters and now it ticks all the time no matter what speed the engine. Will the lifters being stuck cause the motor to miss because it is missing at idle now?

Actually, your lifters should hold the oil pressure from driving and stay hard. After awhile the oil may bleed out, but there is a little check ball that hold the oil pressure in them. You see in hydraulic lifter, the oil pressure from the car actually "pumps up" the lifters to automatically adjust your valve lash. So when you got the 6 to move, all you did was get the check ball to release some of the oil. Its most likely caused by long oil change intervals, cheap oil. or just plain dirty oil making the check ball in the other lifter keep from moving freely. You could try taking them all out, soaking them in a solvent to clean all of the oil deposits off, and then reinstalling them. This should help out, if not you may have to replace them.

i have lifter problem as well, changed head gasket! when head was off had it reco' 8 exh guides, 3angle valve job and a real nice mild port job and a new set of evo 3 valve springs (my valve seats had been pounded) when i reassembled it i did squeeze the lifters in a vice to collapse them to avoid the valves touching on start up. After the start i was running a 10w40 oil the lifter noise went away after about 2 mins' then after driving for a couple of days one or two would tick then go away so i thought to change oil and filter i went to a synthetic 5w40 and a fram perf' filter now they are worse than ever. is it worth going back to a thicker oil or pull them out to soak as you previously said or change them, i do not know if they are the later upgraded lifters or not it was a wrecking yard engine out of a vr4 galant any suggestion would be appreciated. is there a way to tell the early from the moded lifters.

Well if you want to test your lifters, go out and warm your car up to normal operating temp. and shut it off.

Take your valve cover off and press on all of the lifters.

If it is hard, it is good and holding the oil pressure to adjust valve lash.

If it is relieves pressure easily it is bad and you can either try soaking it, taking it apart to clean it all (best results probably), or just replace it.

If it is spongy, you have air inside the lifter with the oil. This is most likely caused by insufficiant oil in the engine or right after all of the lifters have had been compressed and the oil drained from the lines. If you just warm your engine up, drive at slow speeds for awhile, shut it off for a couple of minutes, and repeat, this should bleed the air out of the system.

blue1- thinner oil will let lifters tick more, or more loudly. How many miles on that mill? You should be fine with 10W-40, especially in the middle of your summer there.
Adelaide or Sydney? You could go 15W-40. Alice Springs? 20W-40.

The Lifters were revised sometime in 97 Ive had some 97s apart and they had the old style lifters in the head my guess would be the change
over took place mid or late 97 you can tell which lifter you have by the size hole in the top of the lifter if you have a large hole its the new style if your lifters have a small pin hole on top they are the old style.
You can get the new style lifters for around $10 ea so for around $160.00 and an hour or 2s labor you can swap in the new style lifters
if you get the lifters from a mitsubishi dealer they may cost you a few bucks more ea.
If you have the old style lifters and can aford to replace them with the new style thats the way I would go if not then cleaning them in solvent as stated in the above posts also works as long as the lifters arn't worn out

how hard is it to change lifter on a 4g63 turbo? (6 bolt here)
dont the cams have to be taken out and all? or do they come out easyer then having to remove all the timing components on this engine?
Thanx

some of the lifters will come out just by prying down on the valve spring but some will be hard. do it properly remove the valve gear best in the long run.
