ok, here's the deal. i've had this 90 eclipse gsx since late august, and it's been sitting dead ever since. one day the car just decided to stall out on my way into the driveway, and refused to start up again. i have power to all accessories, it's just not cranking the starter. when i turn the key to start, all i get is a click from behind the center console. took everything appart and found out the click is coming from this little relay that's right next to the ecu. i got a used one that was supposedly good, tried it and still got the same problem. i had the starter checked and it's fine. i've replaced the starter relay, checked the clutch position switch, had the ecu checked. everything is fine. checked the wire going to the starter solenoid, and it's getting no power. i think it's probably a short in the wiring, or maybe a fuseable link gone bad. tested continuity on all 3 fuses located on the positive terminal battery, none of them seem to be bad.

i'm thinking of taking a wire straight from the positive post of the battery, and touching it to the positive on the starter solenoid. if it turns the starter motor and the engine starts... then it's gotta be a short or something in the wiring right. basically, i just want to know if doing this "hot wiring" will screw anything up on my car.

any ideas on what the problem might be would be a great help too.

Nope wont hurt it, actually its a good idea. I have done that trick to start many cars while testing starters and battery cables, rather than walking around the car, getting in the car and starting it, then getting out, and walking to the engine compartment, u get the point. Go for it.

Check your battery terminals and make sure the connection is clean...

Happened to me on my VR-4... turned out that there was some crust on the connectors....

Cleaned that up and it runs perfectly now....

Cheers

Not the nodes on the battery... but the connectors that goes from the battery to the rest of your car....
Take them apart and clean each one... I believe there are a few that connect to the positive node....

When mine failed, it looked clean, until i took it off....
One of the lines were cruddy... Cleaned that and it was all good

check ur timeing belt that coulda went i know when i pulled in my driveway once it jsut stalled and i looked and my timeing belt got eaten up

Hey, if it were your timing belt, when you try to turn over your engine you would hear reallllly high spinning noises. His just clicks, not the timing belt.

yeah, it's not the timing belt, cause the starter doesn't even crank.

i'll check that positive cable from the battery to the starter. i bought a remote starter contraption from checkers the other day, so i might try that and see if it starts. thanks for the help everyone.

ok, i got the car to start with that remote starter switch. ended up wiring in a start button instead of spending countless hours looking through wire harnesses. it's rigged the same way as the remote start switch (wire from the starter solenoid to the start button, and a wire from the battery positive to the start button.) now comes a new question.... does anyone know if this will cause any problems? right now the car starts up after a bit of cranking... but i figured that was because it's been sitting in the garage for months. i'd like to go drive the thing around, but i don't wanna keep using that starter button the way it is if it's gonna screw something up. any input?

did you check your ignition switch, cuz that could be it. excpet i dont think you would hear a click it would just be nothing.
