Ok, fellas. I have just put in a cyclone motor into my fwd tsi. I swapped out the tranny for the fwd one. now everything is done and all the electrical is hooked up, but when I turn the key to the "on" position, not the start position it starts turning over. When I turn the ignition off and take the key out it continues to turn over for another 5 to 10 seconds. I am so lost!!! I thought it might have been a ground wire, but all the grounds are good and not pinched. I even replaced the starter with an extra one I had to see if that would fix the problem....no such luck. I'm fresh out of ideas, so now I need some of your's. I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer me.

Check the wires on your starter. Go to a parts store and see if you can look at a Hayne's manual or something, then write down which way the wires are supposed to go.

There's 3 wires running to your starter. One is negative/ground, another is 12v source, and another is your 'Start' position on your ignition. You may have the 12v and the Start position flipped around. Anyway, it's worth a check :thumb:

Well for some reason I've only found two...hmm. I guess im gonna have to search some more. Thanks for the advice though i appreciate it.

It may be hard to find... there's two main big wires, however, there's a smaller one that attaches via a clip, or some sort of small attachment. That's what actually turns over the starter... it may be on top part of the starter solenoid. Hope that helps, I just remember I ran into the problem of my car not turning over at all, and that wire was the cause.

Well, i have the smaller wire that clips on, but I have only found one large positive wire. I'm gonna take a look again at it today probably seeing how I'm in school at the moment. Thanks for the help man.

There is only one large positive wire, but there's a large negative/ground also. The small wire that clips on is the third wire I was talking about.

I dunno, maybe I'm just a tard, but I can't find a large negative/ground wire for the life of me. Every ground wire that I've found has already been hooked up. And I looked at the Haynes manual and I loved what it said. It said nothing about how many wires there were going to it. It just said "disconnect the wires to the starter". So we'll see what I can do next.

 Yeah, that manual can be a pain in the ass...

Anyway, there should be two main studs that hold your negative and positive. Then there's that small clip, or it may be a small stud it goes on with a nut.

Basically, you need two 12v signals and one ground to make the starter work.

The positive sends 12v to the starter when the ignition is on the "ON" position.
The 12v clip/stud (the small wire) sends a second signal (to turn over) when the "START" position on the ignition is reached.
The negative, of course, grounds out the circuit.

You may have the 12v from the "ON" position hooked up to the 12v for the "START" position. That could be turning the engine over when you reach the on position. Just sounds like a mixup in wires ;) You'll figure it out; good luck :thumb:

Ok, since there's two terminals other then the clip. I have seen that one of the terminals is connected from the solenoid to the starter itself. Then on the other terminal I have the positive large wire on. And then of course the clip is where it's supposed to be. So is there supposed to be the large negative/ground on the other terminal where it has the wire that connects to the starter from the solenoid too? I feel like a dumbass man.

All this 'talk' is confusing!!.... and adding a 'swap' into the equation screws up the diagnosis even more!
Let's go back to basics... For now forget about the negative wire. The basic wiring to a starter is-- two 12v supplies. One supply [the thick wire] has 12v when the key is to ON [or some cars have the 12v there all the time] AND the other 12v supply [the thin wire] gets voltage only when the key is turned to START. [That thin wire tell the starter to 'go'.] So either that thin wire has 12v when it shouldn't, or something in the starter is wrong. So, do this: Disconnect the thin wire and then turn the key ON. Does the starter still crank? It shouldn't! Measure [with a meter] if 12v is at that thin wire. It probably is. That's wrong!
Do the above test and write back so we can figure out the next step!!!!
GOOD LUCK!

I've done that already too, it didn't start turning over, so I suppose that's good.

Well, it's in the shop now anyway getting other things done and I'm just gonna have them do that too at the same time. Hopefully I'll be able to drive it since this has been a project since early august. I appreciate you guys posting on here, it's helped out.

Good luck with it :thumb: These cars are always projects :p
