1st gear grinding? Any idea's?

I just bought a 92 DSM Laser AWD recently and just got it all running after replacing the fuel pump and ecu with an eprom unit.

Taking it for a drive today, I put it into 1st gear, no problems.. But when i start to let the clutch out it just grinds.. not moving at all.. 2nd - 5th and reverse work fine.

What is the problem here? Just 1st gear? What will I end up having to replace, and would it be better to go with OEM or just upgrade the gear to a beefer unit while I'm in there?

You will not know what to replace until you pull it apart and see what is worn out/broken. If you plan on making big power eventually:

Did you ever find an answer to this problem? My car is doing the EXACT same thing. I have a teamrip shift fork and teamrip double first and sedond gear synchros.
 
Did u both check/replace the clutch master and slave cylinders? that is my guess 1st gear syncros dont usually go. 2-4th usually grind before u will hear 1st grind.

Check the fluid, if it is brown or black it is time for a flush and a possible rebuild, this is easy and there are vfaqs for both. Look under the dash after looking at the Vfaq for the clutch master and see if it leaks. then do the same underneath the tranny for the slave cylinder. Then get back to us.

If no leaks maybe it needs to be bled?

Do you have any play in the clutch pedal? (Can you lift up on it with your toe after shifting?) If so, it may be a worn clutch pedal assembly (as was pointed out to me by others). I had a very similar problem with 1st and 2nd grinding.
