I was goin to meet some friends at Dunkin Donuts and I was late so I took the highway and I was on it, car shifts into 3rd and jerks as its doing it (ATX). So I get to the parking lot and pull into a spot and as I do a cloud of smoke comes around my car from underneath. At first I thought my exhaust was smoking but I got out and nothing. Then I see it smoking from under the hood. I pop the hood and its smoking from behind and underneath the intake manifold. I thought I blew a headgasket at first but saw the temp gauge was fine. I back up and see shit all over the ground... its red! "F*ck!!!!!" I check the trans fluid dipstick and theres barely anything registering on it and a big puddle on the ground. Does anyone know if I did indeed blow the trans or a gasket or what? Thanks in advance. And if I did blow it I think its time for a 5 speed.

Hmm.....it sounds to me that your tranny is indeed blown , the exact same thing happend in my dads mirage when i took the tranny apart it looked fine but the thing is that the tourqe converter was busted to hell and yes it was fixable but it was not worth it so i put in a new tranny
there you go if it helps any

I can drive it around a little but almost just letting it cruise. I tried to give it a little bit of gas maybe 50% and it knocked really hard. I was told it could be a hose, but that doesn't sound right at all, its been shifting kinda hard lately at times too. Time to go jack her up, I'm kinda scared. Any other ideas or info guys? Thanks ALP584.

no problem , when u jack her up check out your torque converter , and also if you do drive around with ur tranny in that state have plenty auto tranny fluid with you , but jack her up n take a look

I jacked it up, poured more tranny fluid in, no leaks. Started it up, no leaks. Put it into drive and got it to shift, there was grinding noises and it was pissing tranny fluid from what my dad says is the main seal. I had my car towed to my dad's cousin's trans shop. I think I'm just gonna fix it up for now then save up and come spring time buy a 97-99 turbo DSM preferably awd, although I would really like to have the AWD for the winter since I go snowboarding a lot. No service on the car til monday though, I will keep you updated ASAP. Any other ideas or comments keep em coming. Later guys, and thanks again ALP. :dsm:4E

My tranny died about a month ago, due to an improper tranny rebuild.

Rebuilt Auto Trans $900 - Dies 2 years later/250 miles later (dont feel like explaining)
Used Trans Off DSMTRADER.com $380 - Got screwed completely, internals covered in rust (unuseable)
Having Mitsu Dealer tear both trannies down $411 (I'm a Moron)

Having a $250 parts car Priceless Now swapping my POS to a manual trans Fook automatic

My tranny was all kinds of f*cked up, or should I say "is" because its not rebuilt yet. It is definitely time for a rebuild. 88xxx miles. I want to go manual but I don't have plans of keeping the car past the spring, come springtime I'm looking for a 97-99 gsx 5 speed only. After I get more info about what exactly is being done and what was wrong (most likely later on friday) I will let you guys know. I know shit about trans but I think it was leaking just foward of the bell housing where a seal may have been, I dunno.

fluid can leak from anywhere trust me and that is ur smoke problem. there is also a gasket between the valve bodie and trans that could be your jerking cause if that gasket is f***ed then the fluid wont flow right. good luck I work in trans shop for ford and trans are EXSPENSIVE!
