OK, I have a problem running too lean(a/f gauge dips way red), and found even more so when I checked my spark plugs and they had melted tips!(you can see pics here at <http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=79281>) I replaced the plugs with standard NGK gapped at .028 w/ new magnecore wires. I have been running fine since then, still lean, but car runs fine.
- Now here's what happened;
I was driving home on the highway tonight and a Neon was trying to start somethin. I was cruising at 55 mph, so I dropped it in 3rd and took off, then let off the gas so he could catch up, LOL. As if he had a chance! My car was running great and it felt so good! He was catching up pretty quick at about 70 mph now that I'm in neutral, lookin like he wanted to try a "ricer fly by". So I put it in 4th, he got up to my window, by now I got up to his speed, and then off I go again leaving him in my dust. I floored it this time making sure he wouldn't try me again. I was going about 115mph, then all of the sudden my my boost creeped up to 23psi!!! I only have a 14b, so I was like HOLY SHIT!!! My car sounded like it FARTED when this happened! And then I put it in neutral and coasted for awhile. I noticed my car was idling rough, VERY ROUGH, and almost stalled a few times as I coasted down to 55mph. I put it in 4th gear to cruise and I noticed my car was struggling to go. I was trying to keep the rpm’s steady but the VAC(on the boost gauge) was erratic between -15 and -5, jumping up and down. I gave it a little gas and it was hesitant. *It felt like my car was only running on 2 cylinders!* VERY ROUGH and VERY HESITANT to accelerate and SPUTTERED VERY BAD! I only had a couple of miles until I made it home, but I took it REAL easy. It didn’t get worse on the drive home, but my car felt VERY SICK and still felt like it was trying to make it on 1 or 2 cylinders, shaking the car a bit. I got home, popped the hood, saw that the oil dip stick popped up and sprayed a bit of oil, but that’s happened once before so “no big deal”, right? Then as I was wiping everything clean I noticed the head/valve gasket seal was wet with oil! So I wiped that off too, but I’m not sure if that’s bad. I took my plugs out and the spark plugs were in great shape, so it wasn’t that same problem. I’m thinking there’s internal damage, I dunno?!?! I’m going to start my car in the morning and see how it runs. Some one please give me good news, cuz this sounds like something bad!!! I wanted everyone's opinion before I payed a mechanic to look at it.
Thanx!
I'm soooooo worried!
:cry:

Well, I did some tests. 1st off, my plugs & wires are good. I cleaned them and put em back in. There is no smoke in the exhaust or anywhere else. I left the car running while I pulled out each plug wire. I pulled the left one, the car almost stalled(good), put it back. I pulled the next, same thing, and the next, same thing too. I pulled the far right(cylinder #1), and nothing happened(BAD!). So this means there is something wrong with cylinder #1. I pulled the spark plug from that cylinder out again and there was oil and debris on it. The oil was pretty thick on the tip of the plug. - This is BAD! -
Melted, sounds about right:cry:
I'm towing it into the shop tomorrow for a compression test and I'm sure cylinder #1 will fail. Can anyone tell me that this problem isn't as bad as I think it is. Cuz it looks like I'm rebuilding the engine.:(

Well, I found a TG63 cyclone w/ Big 16g & 550 injectors for $1150. It has that kewl red valve cover too:D
Just gonna swap motors, wish me luck.
Does anyone know if the cyclone intake mani is better than the 1g intake mani?

Practically the same thing happened to my car except it happened at normal highway driving - no racing anything. I tested all the plugs and I was able to pull the 2nd plug from the left out and nothing happened. Well we took the head off (boy that was tons of fun) and found one of the exhaust valves from that plug was broken, like a quarter of the base was completely gone... Soo we ended up changing all the exhaust valves (wow that was extra fun), cleaning all the intake valves, replacing head gasket, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, and timing belt pulleys. Now it runs, and will probably need quite a few days of driving to get back to where it used to be, but first everything needs to be connected back to how it originally was. Well good luck with your new engine... Believe me that's probably the way to go :thumb:

You do realize that your machismo just costed you a lot of money, against a Neon no less? Before you go off ordering a new engine, why don't you pull apart the one you have right now. You MIGHT be able to save some money, and it sounds like you will need it..

But did you find oil in the cumbustion chamber, there was oil on my spark plug.:confused:

Hot enough to melt the pistons? I have an EGT gauge, and pay attention at it when stressing the engine, until I get everything squared away. Anyway, how many degrees F would it have to be to do this?

No there wasn't any oil in the combustion chamber... but that could be caused by a broken plug gasket under the valve cover, allowing oil to get into the combustion chamber by the break. I'd take Leet's advice, take it apart and figure out what's wrong. If you can find out the problem, it will cost much much less than getting a swap... then if you can't, you know a little bit more about your car. I know I said that a new motor is probably the way to go but I realize there is no point in spending $1000 more than what is needed to fix something possibly very cheap. But in the end, it's all up to what you want to do. Hope I helped. :)

Well..... piston #1 is melted.
I'm buying a JDM 4G63(6-bolt), 550 injectors, EGT & Fuel press gauges.
I was trying to find a 4G63 with the 16g and 550's, but they said that the 4G63 with 16g JDM's are only 2g(7-bolt). Is this true?:confused:
