Cutcanister filter being dented

Real quick...I cut the canister on the air filter and now my air filter bangs up on this metal piece and it's eating through the filter and denting it...Any quick tips?? I have an old tire tube cut out and standing between the two, but didn't kow if there are any better ideas..
