Desperately in need of quick help here. Yesterday got the notorious fish smell, followed by my car dying. Pulled the ECU, one cap was leaking but it didn't hurt the trace on the board, got the new caps soldered in, now the car will start and run but I have a batt/alternator light on, e-brake light on, and CEL occasionally followed by the car dying after a coupld of minutes of running? Is this just a dead battery or is my ECU actually fuggered? Do I need the reset the ECU and how the hell do I do that? Please, I'm desperate here.

Since I've gotten no replies I'll update and give a better rundown of what has happened.

Alright, yesterday it my car died, fish smell, the usual suspects of ECU death. Since I had a set of replacement caps for it I figured I'd give it a shot and try to see if the ECU could be salvaged. Very little stuff on the board, had the caps put in, the tech cleaned everything off the board and I put it back in the car. Got the battery recharged and started her up. Right now, I'm getting a batt/alt light and e-brake light (same set of lights as when my alternator belt went) and my power steering seems to be a little stiffer. What could be wrong other than my ECU actually being fried but apparently still servicable enough to drive? I let the car run for about half an hour including taking a quick drive and no problems other than the 2 lights staying on. Any thoughts?

can you borrow a ecu from a friend? i would look into that first. unless you have a battery or altenator going down on you.

Picking up a new ECU today from a junkyard. The alternator is about 6 months old and the battery was perfect until all of this happened. I'm crossing my fingers but we shall see.

I had a something like that happen to me. Car wouldnt start, sure enough was the caps. I changed them out, but now i get a alt/bat light and a coolant light. It starts up once now then i get all these error codes and it wont start back up. I think my ecu is shot, must have leaked to bad. Sucks cause its an eprom. I borrowed an ecu from a friend and when i was putting it in i noticed the seafood smell. His caps leaked as well. Not as bad as mine though. Now ive got to find a new ecu though:cry:.
