Hi everyone I'm in need of help, I want to try and fix this problem otherwise I think I'm going to have to sell the car :(. Recently I was driving on the freeway then all of a sudden the engine starts grinding and shaking badly, and I had to pull off and the car had barely any power. I had it towed back to my house and started it once just to see how it sounded and immediately turned it off, it sounds like metal grinding loudly from the engine, I have checked and it is not the turbo. It will run but the grinding is horrible so I never keep it running for any amount of time. What would be the best way to go about checking the problem? I've done all sorts of bolt on stuff like suspension, turbos, etc etc but no engine internals. Should I go from the top and work my way down? Any suggestions or things to check would be greatly appreciated. The car is a 1997 gst automatic. Thanks!

just cruisin, felt like i hit a bump and then the noise kept goin. I don't mind pulling the pan or anything like that, if possible I just don't want to do a whole engine tear-down to figure out what the problem is.

Well with a noise like that it and a 7 bolt you might want to consider going from the "bottom" up. Checking things out from the oil pan isn't really a complete tear down, you would just need to get a new gasket if everything looked ok. Crank the motor over by hand with a ratchet and see what you get, however you may further damage the motor, but in that case you would need a rebuild anyway. Hopefully its not something catastrophic, but a starting point.

I don't know the exact noise you are talking about but there is always your tranny to consider remember.
