I recently was driving home from work when I noticed smoke from under the hood at a stop light. I pulled over and opened my hood to find that the valve cover gasket had a leak spilling oil all over my turbo heat shield. As I was only about six to eight miles from my house i decided to drive it home.. As I was driving the car began to overheat but I did make it and parked it safely enough. The next day I got a ride with a friend to get a new gasket and ended up ordering the whole head set planning on just doing the head gasket as well. Anyway we removed most of the things ( power steering pump, alernator, exhaust manifold, fuel rail, injectors, and assorted vacuum lines) had our momentum stopped by a few very stubborn bolts that we would rather not have broken off and ended up putting everything back and just doing the valve cover gasket. We used rtv black sealant wherever we thought it would help and left it to sit all night. This morning I went ahead and reinstalled everything and reattached the wiring harness carefully and the lines. Left the plugs out and fired it up like it suggests in the haynes manual, to prime the oil pump i presume, after filling the radiator.
Reinstalled new wires and thought I was ready to fire it up and as I go to start it it cranks and does not start. It tries to start but back fires. Thats my problem I just cant get it to start I checked the battery first and although its new when I wasnt cranking it held only 12.4v. Well any suggestions would be helpful or if I can make my question any clearer I would be more than happy. Oh the car is a 91 eagle talon tsi fwd.

much to my dismay we must have puntured a radiator hose coming from the bottom of the water pump because it began spraying antifreeze and water out at high pressure so ill fix that after work. Apparently your work is only as good as the work of your friends...
