went up to autozone cause cel was on found out it was my front oxygen sensor went out driving it home and stopped at a stop sign by my house and mad white smoke started coming out of my exhaust so i jumped out to look at it its really thin but constant so i drove it up in my drive way and no smoke put it in nutral and there was no smoke at all hmm so i jumped back in and drove it up and down the street it only smokes when im stopped . NO WATER IN OIL DIPSTICK NO WATER COMING OUT OF EXHAUST NO TAPPING but i took apart my smic to find black oil in it and in the hose but none in turbo or around turbo there is no shaft play at all what so ever. my mind is boggled just got into dsm

temp never got over half and oil was below normal
 
Your turbo is blown. Pull of the intake pipe and wiggle the compressor wheel. Chances are, it wiggles back at you. In, out, up, down.

Doing a quick search for "white smoke" on this site would have netted you this answer (usually posted by me) in about a hundred other threads just like yours.
 
no it doesnt move at all it spins thats it... i looked at the other "white smoke" threads and they are not what is wrong with my car.:beatentodeath:
 
sometimes it smells like coolant and sometimes oil:notgood:.... start it up at idle no smoke on start up or whole time its idling. smoke only starts after i drive when i stop it smokes then is keeps smoking then stops then will repeat it will start right after i stop and go then it will go away:nono: my coolant reservior tank has a lil crack in it and it dripps coolant all the time.....(coolant puddle in my driveway everyday) but car never will run hot it is always perfectly in the middle. and when i drive it everything feels fine car still boosts and TURBO IS GOOD NO SHAFT PLAY AT ALL NONE! COMPRESSION IN THE ENGINE IS 150-155 IN ALL CYLINDERS:mad:
 
hmm i will have to try that where do you get the test done or could i do it myself like i did with the compression test
 
I'm pretty sure a leakdown test is done with a machine that most mechanic shops will have, it's not something you can just go and buy and do yourself. You may have to spend a little money to get it done but it may find out what's wrong with the car.
 
dam hmm i guess im just bringing my car to import powerhouse or pitstop performance tomorrow unless anyone knows of a better mits place in phx
 
I'd first check the oil for any milk shake, then start it with the radiator cap off and full of coolant, if it blows the coolant out then its a head gasket leaking, or if you see little bubbles coming up then that also is a leaking head gasket. You can also try holding your hand behind the exhaust while idling and then smell your hand, if it smells like gas, then its running to rich. If it smells like oil or coolant then its probably a faulty head gasket. Let me know!
 
If it turns out to be only oil burning (not coolant) you may just need to change your valve seals.

I had a DOHC 4G61 (same design as 4G63 but 1.6L) that did that to me really bad, just the way you described. It turned out someone must have "hot tanked" the cylinder head, but never replaced the valve seals. The head looked new, but the valve seals were dust. Every single one of them crumbled into pieces. The smoke trail would come and go as I drove.

Valve seals are cheap, but a PITA to change. If you remove both cams, then screw your air hose into the spark plug hole, it can be done without removing the head. Done it several times.
 
could this be caused by my oxygen sensor being out? cars running to rich? dont really have time to bring car into a shop..
 
yeah it smells just like gas and i only got 60-70 miles on a half tank of gas........ could i still drive it with this running rich problem? would it mess things up?

The oxygen sensor code in the computer doesn't mean the sensor is bad, just it is "sensing" something out of the ordinary= whatever you have going thru the exhaust. PCV valves, intake breather hose and valve seals will be likely failures with good compression. Your profile doesn't say if your car is manual or auto. If it's a manual, have someone follow you around the block, valve seals will smoke everytime you let off to shift. I would suggest turbo seals if knew more about them.
 
yes it is manual and yea right when i pull in the clutch to shift there is a lil puff of smoke then it goes away as i speed up then again when i shift into third then when it idles it goes away all together
 
Sounds like valve seals to me, but again I'm a turbo rookie, so that could still be an issue. Try pulling the plugs out an see if they have black soot built up on the end of the threads and the side electrode. Burnt oil will be thick and crusty black, over rich will just be black and coolant will be crusty white.
 
plugs are perfect look brand new hmm it could be a valve seal hmm just dont know dsm like i do sr20's
