how do you test 91 flip up headlight motors?

Maybe I'm retarded, but coulnt you just try to hit the switch to flip them up? And if they pop up, they work

Im really not sure when they are supposed to flip up. I just know that when I had my car running, I turned on the lights and the lightbulbs shine but they dont flip up. This is my first flip up headlight car. The motors didnt even make a noise, I think there is probably a way to rebuild the motors.

The headlights flip if you 1. push the button (with the lights off) or 2. if you turn on your lights. Pushing the button (1) leaves your headlights up if the lights are on or not and (2) will pop them up/down automatically with the lights. I dont have a service manual with me at the moment but checking your fuses would be a good place to start.

There is also a mod that disables the auto pop up with the lights. If this has been done to your car you will have to push the button and then turn the lights on to get the headlights up. Search for the "chicklet" mod.

I took one motor apart and I didnt see any obvious problems with it so I put it back together. What button do I need to push? Brights? I turned the lights on before and the headlights dont flip. Do the headlight flip up motor and lights just have one fuse for both?

EDIT: I just tested my lights, and nothing happened, I pushed the bottom. I just now realize what that button is for now. The motors didnt make a noise or anything, but the lights shine. I want to understand why they go bad. It acts like its not getting power at all. I could not turn the car on because it doesnt have an engine. Do I have to turn the motor on to get them to flip up?

Check the pop-up relay at the P/S side of the engine compartment in front of the Battery. If both of your headlight motors do not work up/down that is probably the issue.

Can also test to see if the motor works going down by manually cranking each popup in the up position and then working the lights off/on to see if they lower.

I'm initimately familiar with the popup mechanism having chased why my one headlight would not go down for over a year :( (fixed now) :)

A quick way to test a relay would be to swap another relay (one in working order) from somewhere else in the fuse box and see if it works.

Im pretty sure the Vfaq has 'exactly' how it works, when the motor rotates it contacts certain points, and those points are in places on a 360* rotation.
I have the same problem with my car, engine fire and tons of other bs now.
Try google, I know I can pull it up on mitchell if you really need it.
