okay i pulled the head today on my 1G Talon. it blew the timing belt while running and after i put the new belt on, ran compression checks and came out pretty crappy. 2 cylinders had 0psi, 1 had 70psi and the last one had 130. which is still too low. so i am gonna pull all the valves out and get a head job done... thinking about a port and polish.... i was told around 200 to 250 for a complete valve job, or 250-270 for the port and polish. thinking i might as well do the P&P since i got it apart and place BRAND new Performance Valves in it. only thing is, when i pulled the head i found something kinda messed up on the pistons. where the valves were smacking it there are some nice grooves in the piston. check these pics out.

i dont think the grooves on the piston will affect compression or anything like that, but upon inspection of the head, and the block, i know i am definitly in need of 8 brand new intake valves, and there are a few grooves on the exhaust side of the pistons... so i guess it wouldnt be a bad idea to replace all of them! let me know what you all think.

also whats a good way to clean the piston face and what can i use to clean the old head gasket material off the block and head?

On the exhaust side of the piston in those pics is fine that is the stock valve cast in them.

You need the look at he cylinder walls to check for scoring, rough marls, groves. If it is not smooth then the bottom end needs replaced.

I dont see any distortion on the pistons, they dont look like they are out of round or gonna be any problem

I would just smooth the sharp edges on the piston tops so they are not sharp, just smooth, and dont get carried away doing this.

Gaskit scraper and you can use brake cleaner or most type of carberator cleaners

well silver, on all the cylinders is the marks for the valve seating. but on cyl 4 there is a definite groove/indention where it looks like the valve struck the piston next to the cast marks. but that wont affect compression right??? so just take a dremel tool and grind down the parts that are grooved up? i checked the cyl walls all around and it looks good,... no scoring or grooves or nothing. so carb cleaner or brakleen and some fine grit sand paper? that should do the job on the piston faces and what should i use to get the old gasket material off completely?

I lost my timing belt on the track at 100 mph and the pistons can take some beating. Umlike other cars DSM's can handle some abuse to the pistons. They do not chip easy. But your going to have to get your head redone for sure. You'll have to probably do more than just replace valves. Valve seats, guides, seals, etc should be all checked out. Bottom end is fine.

okay anyone know a good place to get a complete set? i need all 16 valves, all the valve seats, all the guides and all the seals. and an MLS head gasket. plus all the other gaskets... anyone know a good way to pull off the old gasket material from the intake manifold. this stuff just doesnt wanna come off and i am afraid if i go at it with a scraper, i will tear up the aluminum on the head and the manifold. any ideas?

yesh i am thinking about just buying a head.... the valves are gonna cost me around 110 and the head gasket is gonna be about 110 for the entire gasket set. and then the seats, guides, seals, probably another 50-60 bucks then i gotta pay around 200 to get the head worked on... so thats almost 500 just to replace the valves... but i will have new parts in there. versus dropping a junk yard head on it which will cost around 100 bucks and the head gasket set which will be 110. dont know though.

I don't know if you pay a premium in Hawaii for a headgasket, but $110 is way too much for standard head gasket. I can get a complete gasket kit for the entire engine for $110. Swapping a head you just need a head gasket and maybe an intake manifold gasket. Exhaust manifold gasket is metal and is reuseable, and valve cover gasket you can probably get away with reusing by using some rtv to help it along. You will have to buy some head bolts though. All in all, it's gonna run you some cash. Keep in mind though most of the time if your looking for a used head especially a 1G one it'll probably have a lot of miles on her and you'd want to get it redone anyways. Typical price for a head redone at a machine shop with parts included for a timing belt snap damage is around $500. IF you need a bunch of gaskets and such drop me a PM with what you need. I probably have a bunch of it that I never used that I could sell you cheap since I have no use for it.
