Hey guys,
I have a favor to ask. Would somebody post a picture of the GM MAF please? I just want to make sure I'm on the same page in this DSMtuners.com world. The MAF is just after the airfilter, right? The GMMAF is an upgrade of later interest to me.
I keep hearing about how it's located between the Throttle Body and the BOV or something along those lines.

ALSO, I am interested in the DSMlink software. I am currently looking to get a credit card and one of my first purchases with it will probably be a laptop. What laptop is good for DSMlink? I know there are alot of good ones out there, but what seems to perform well. And if I have DSMlink do I still need a datalogger, or whatever it is?

Thanks.:talon:

If you have DSMlink you do not need a separate datalogger. You can log data using DSMlink.

Well, he ^ used the same pictures I did so no need to post them twice. The first one is the GM MAF and the second one is it installed in blow thru setup (between the bov and tb).

When you're looking for a laptop for DSMlink, I would just get a cheap, basic one. No need to get fancy. You can look on eBay or the classifieds here. They can be had for around $100 or so on the cheap end.

DSMlink is a logger and a tuner so it will be the only thing you'll have to buy: :thumb:

No, the MAF is not just an air filter.

Any old laptop with a serial port that you can get online for about $200 will do. If you need a starting point, look at the Dell Latitude C series or the C640.

No, I didn't say that...I'm not that new. LOL.:talon:

My calculator can hook up to computers. I wonder if it can be used as a datalogger. Can it? It is like $200. It's a scientific/graphing calculator.:talon:

No. I can't say I've ever heard of someone using a graphing calculator. It needs to be able to connect directly to your OBD port. And I'm sure the only input on it looks kind of like a headphone jack. You'd need a USB port on it and then software (which no one makes).

You'd be better off getting a laptop, which can be had for cheap on eBay.

I know you can use a palm with DSMLink, but not the calc you have. I am not sure about using it with just logging software. Most datalog cables have a serial connection for the logging device which you can adapt to a usb mif needed. Not sure what your calc has, but my TI-89 has none of the above.

I would personally not spend the cash on any tuning device besides DSMLink. I was going down this road not too long ago and by the time you spend $250-300 on SAFC & logging software/pda and data cable, you are half way to DSMLink. I knew I would want to upgrade anyway, so I just skipped the middle step and I love it. I am a huge advocate because I am a visual learner and the graphs are much more user friendly to work with. Ok enough with the sales pitch.

Check out this page for tuning a GM MAS with dsmlink. http://jeffgst.com/gmafcalibration1.html

BTW. DSMLink can be used with a PDA. Check here. DSMLink - FAQ

Show me some pictures of the graph if you guys can. I just want to know how relatively easy/hard it is. Does it come with instructions? I'm curious.:talon:

im really not sure if i need a dsmlink. i think i want one because i can tune my car (wich i would have to learn how first though) but yeah im a rally racer. so would it be practical for me to get a dsmlink? does anyone think i should or just save the money and dont. i also dont have any type of data logger so this would also be my data logger for me. please any advice would be appreciated. thanks

It's located after the blowoff valve, in the direction of the moving air. So it's connected to the intercooler piping. Can somebody show me a pic with GMMAFt with the entire engine bay? That'd be great. I can more fully understand the setup that way.:talon:

Here's a shot of my engine bay. If you look in the upper intercooler piping, you can see my GM MAF betwen my bov and tb. There is a reducer coupler on each side of the MAF. So mine goes in between my uicp and my throttle body elbow.

DSMlink doesn't equal more power. It's not like if you get DSMlink, you gain 35hp. You just gain the ease of being able to tune your car yourself (after you learn how to). The program can do a lot. Also, there are the DSMlink forums which are very helpful as well. If you want proof, DSMlink has been run on cars in the single digit quarter mile times. I don't know how deep they've run, but that's pretty impressive to me.
