Well I just put my engine back together I didn't take that much apart on it. Well before I started the car I put new valve cover gasket and new oil it wouldn't start so I took my battery down to auto zone and the battery was totally dead. I bought a new battery and I'm able to crank over but not start now. After I tried to start the car I smell gas in the engine bay but I don't see any fuel leaking. I used a volt meter and did a diagnostic on it and I'm only getting code for EGR but I don't have EGR sensor on my car since I'm not in California. Before I took my engine apart it was ticking/knocking. I checked all my sensors and there plugged in. please help me.

Thanks in advance!

The gas smell is because gas is getting in the the engine, which is normal. It sounds like its your starter to me. Have you tried jumping your car?

before I replaced my battery I jump start my car which had no luck.

@boostedGSX: How do I check the coil pack?

Grab a voltmeter and check the resistance. If it within spec, then your next step would be to check the transistor pack. BTW, if it does turn out that it is your coil pack, make sure you get one for a 90, because the 91-94s are different.

Ok in my manual it says check resistances between terminal 4 and 2 do i put the positive lead in 4 and negative in 2? I don't really understand this.

EDIT: I just tested the ignition coil and it says it needs to be replaced. If I replace this does this mean I need to replace the spark plugs and spark wire?

Well guys I jsut got done talking to my mom telling her I need to replace the ignition coil. She wants me to rebuild the engine since the engine has 173,000 miles on it. Would it be better just to rebuild the engine since the engine is knocking?

If you have the time and money, I'd say go for it. :thumb: And if you're going to build it you might as well build it right: eliminate balance shafts, good rods and pistons, ARP head studs, metal headgasket, etc. :talon:

1. Are you doing this yourself or are you going to have a shop do it?
2. You have the engine that everyone wants already so it would be best to start to put together a budget.
3. Research research research. (what do you want the car to do and what you are willing to sacrifice.)
4. Once you have a budget, start determining what your goals are for short and longterm.
eg. HP, 1/4 Time, Autocross, reliable DD, etc..
5. Then research research research again only part prices, labor prices, misc parts required to rebuild.
6. Ask questions about other people's builds.
7. Confirm prices for labor and parts and start to order. Organize everything on a timleine, heck, put in MS Project if you want.

Did I miss anything?

what did you mean MS project? Also my mom wants me take it up to her friend to rebuild the engine but this will be around the summer. My mom said she will double them oney I have after I graduate from high school.

Ok thank you :thumb:

Sorry for my double post. But when I rebuild the engine will I be able to put performance parts in it and have it running on first start up or do I need to put stock parts in it then start upgrading? By the end of school year I will be able to put 3500 to 4000 dollars into it
