Okay well I just picked up a 99 GSX with 69,000 miles. 1 owner. Has been sitting since it was last serviced at 60,000 miles (timing belt, etc). When I bought it I noticed it was only getting 15-16 MPG, quickly to notice the CEL came on and I needed a new MAF. Replaced that today as well as changing the oil to Mobil 1 Synthetic, putting brand new Denso Platinum plugs in (old plugs pulled had no sign of coolant being mixed in) and checking all the hoses, bolts etc. All 4 cylinders read 150 for the compression test. Quicky noticed that my gas mileage is back to normal, but the smoking while stopped at a stop light/sign etc is still there. Turbo has no shaft play what so ever. Is this due to a failing/leaking head gasket? Thanks

the NGK BPR6ES plugs are the best for every situation. i was using them even at 21 lbs of boost and they were holding up great!!! if you get those i wouldnt even worry about changing them colder unless its about time for new plugs

The compression in a2g engine should be around 170-190.

Yea, your right... if the engine is brand new. But with 70k on it is going to have lower compression.

As long as they are within 10% of each other and are all above 135 (I believe) your fine.

What color is the smoke? Also remember its winter time, so the cold will cause a lot more condensation to appear as smoke. This is perfectly normal. Does the "smoke" go away or become less apparent after more than a half hour of driving?

As far as the plugs go... NGK or denso will work. Obviously ngk is preferred, but I’ve never had a problem with denso!

Good luck! Sounds like you got a nice car.
