the timing marks on the out cam gear are not lining up.. right now my motor is not at TDC however the dowel marks on the cam gear appear to be parallel (used a strait edge to compare) but shouldnt the outer timing marks on the gear line up even since the dowels are both pointing down? im scared to start my car. please help...

the engine is not at TDC right now....the dowels are pointing at 6 oclock but the outer timing marks are not lining up, i took a strait edge to the dowels and the are parallel....

i rotated the crankshaft yesterday while i was putting the crank pulley on.....but the motor was already timed, i was just changing my a/c belt. but i dont want to start the car because right now, the dowels are pointing down, but the outer marks arent lined up. i wasnt doing a timing job i just noticed this after the a/c belt install. i never messed with the timing belt though

this is my great Picasso sketch of what im trying to describe to you. the dowels are blue and the outer timing marks are red. i tried uploading a pic but it kept saying the file is to large. exhaust cam on left/intake cam on right

To check if the timming belt is properly aligned, spin the crank with the pulley on till the cams look like that and the crank reads tdc. In your pic you sketched, it looks like the dowels are not straight up and down.
