My 91 talon was recently in a wreck and the power steering lines/ res. were damaged. Rather then replace this I was thinking of just doing away with it all together. Just wondering if anyone knew what all needs to be done or if anyone has any thoughts against this that may not have crossed my mind.
Thanx,
Dan

They only come on 1.8 liter Lasers and Eclipses til '94 I believe. Just get rid of the other crap and you're all set. I'm personally just using the power rack by itself, pump and lines are long gone. You'll build up some forearms in the process, but you don't get the slower steering ratio of the manual rack either.

Its fine to drive like that but it depends on how you do it. if you ever plan to put your PS back in then make sure when you take out the lines and pump and stuff that you plug the rack with soem plugs from ACE hardware or something so that there is fluid still in it. if not you will dry out the rack completely and it will just leak and squeek if you want to put fluid back in it.

I suggest using a manual rack as it will be much easier than just taking out the pump of a PS rack. The ratio is a little bit different ( i think like 2 full turns) but not really noticable. All you need is the rack and a full day to do it cause its a lot of work...

i tried searching but couldnt come up with anything really...ive got my power steering pump/lines all removed and i had a rubber line connecting the input and output on the power rack for awhile but it would leak some still

ide just buy a manual rack but im broke as a joke, so the power rack will have to do for now..but my question is, can i just plug up each port on the power rack, or is it better to connect them with a rubber line?...and also, before i do this again (either plugging or connecting the ports), would pouring a little fluid back in the rack first help it turn any easier or smoother? or does it not make any difference at this point?

TIA

Its going to be hard as hell turning either way with the pump removed. If you dont care and just want it out then plug pressure and return on it so the seals dont get screwed up, this way you can hook the pump up later and you should be fine...

I would just fill the rack to the point where it wants to run out. This will help to keep it lubricated and working fairly well. Then plug the holes.

thanx for the reply's....i guess ill just plug them up then

i wish i could get a manual rack but im in the middle of a motor build, clutch, ect. install and i just dont have the extra money to spend on a manual rack.

thanx again

wait a minute.... Dude let me tell you something! If you are in the middle of a motor and tranny build up (hence they are out of the car) trust me and replace the damn rack NOW! You should take out a loan from your grandma or something for $200 and buy a reman. 1.8L rack or something, cause once you put all that back in the time to replace it will multiply by at leist 10 times....

LOL i know...i am thinking i will try and get enough money...ive got some wheels and springs i just posted up in the for sale section so i can hopefully sell them and get enough cash...

theres so many damn things that i need to replace or buy now that the motor is out and it adds up QUICK!

screw it, i went ahead and ordered a manual rack. got it for $75 plus shipping from a junk yard off www.car-part.com and it comes with a warranty and he claims the passenger side bracket (who knows about that though)

I read some threads about removing the cooler, reservoir and pump for the power steering and just running a hose from the return to the feed lines on the rack to loop the flow of fluid. Does this ruin the rack? Any drawbacks to doing this? Will there be much of a difference in the way the steering feels?

Any info would be great!

No this will not ruin your rack, but you must loop the pressure and return fittings to make it work right.

It will be harder to turn your vehicle (of course).

A power steering rack with no power to it is harder to turn than a manual rack.

Besides the obvious irritation in the increase in resistance while doing routine driving maneuvers such as parking, you will get more torque steer effect back through the steering wheel. However, if you feel the 5 horsepower and twelve pounds of weight are that crucial, have at it.

If you plan on autocrossing or road racing I wouldnt do it. I bought mine with the powersteering removed. I dont know if theres a manual rack in it or not, but it sucks to steer in parking lots and is definetly harder to quickly steer (like in auto crossing).
