I found out yesterday that both my inner CV boots are torn. Swapping the CV boots is just too much a pain when I can get new axles online for a reasonable price. I checked the VFAQ and the CV repair / axle swap guide seems to be for MT cars. Before I attempt this job, I really need to know what the difference would be for an automatic. Anyone know out there? Wisemen??

Here's the VFAQ: http://www.vfaq.com/mods/CVboots.html

Also, it looks like only one axle fits an AT. Not only is it more expensive than MT axles, but there is no reference to ABS unlike MT cars. The axle at the top of this page is the correct one for a 96 GST automatic, correct?

Not a catchy enough title, I see.

I shall answer my own question for others who need to do this in the future. According to several shop manuals, axles differ by:

Driver side / Passenger side
2WD / AWD
AT / MT
ABS / Non-ABS
And of course year / model

Autozone sells axles (half-shafts) even for AT (more expensive than MT) for $60 + $25 core charge. Much easier to do full swap than to change out CV boots. According to shop manuals, the process of actually changing out the axles is similar across all models. So you can use the VFAQ above for removing the axles.

Oh and the new axles from a store like autozone comes with new axle nuts, so no need to buy those separately. And your mits dealer should give you the cotter pins for them for free.
