I have a 1996 Eclipse Automatic GSX. In November both plugs and wires were replaced by my mechanic after I had received a “Check Engine Light” warning. I have an OBD II tester and the error message was P0302 or cylinder 2 misfire. The wire and plugs had been replaced about 2 years before. Two weeks ago my car did not want to go down the street unless it had warmed up for 2-3 minutes other wise it would shudder. On new Years day the check engine light went on and when checked with my OBD II tester, the error was found to be was P0302 or cylinder 2 misfire. I reset the code let the engine warm up and it ran ok that day. By Thursday the light reappeared with the same P0302 or cylinder 2 misfire. A little history prior to November’s changing of the plugs my car was idling poorly and shook gently every 4th revolution and my car had problems with going up grades. Both problems seemed to dissipate on their own and my mechanic though I had gotten bad gas or at least low octane.

Last Friday January 5th, My mechanic again replaced the plug on Cylinder 2 and for the moment the car runs ok. The plug (5 weeks old) had corrosion on it.

My mechanic believes (is not sure) that what we are dealing with is a blown headgasket. There are no other symptoms of a blown headgasket other than the plug’s corrosion. The coolant has not gone down in the overflow, the car is not overheating, there is no vapor in the exhaust and I do see signs of coolant in the oil.
I am wondering what other car problems could cause the fouled plug, ie rings, valves, ERG etc.

Please advise-Thanks Rick

Have a look at your injector nearest t problem cylinder. Does the plug look dark colored / fouled or is it a light grey color. I'm guessing it might be an injector stuck open if the plug if fouled or closed and the cylinder is running lean.

The plug was dark colored. Another bit of info, compression on cylinders 2 & 3 was 135 while 1 & 4 were 175.
