Hi everyone. I want to take my car to the shop this weekend to see what is wrong with it, and I just wanted to check with some people more knowledgable than me what they think could be wrong, or what I suggest the mechanic check. Thanks!

Here are the details of the car:

1995 GSX
Auto trany
154k miles (rebuilt at 100k)

Problems:

-Makes a clicking/ticking sound for a little bit when the car has not been on for very long, but then goes away once it has warmed up.

-Exhaust is BAD, sometimes it'll shoot blackish smoke out the exhaust.

I have heard that the ticking sound could be crankwalk, but I am not sure because it goes away after a little bit

Future (hopefully): My plans with this car is to get the engine running well first. After that I would like to do the stage 1 engine performance upgrades (running 300-350hp), and suspension. Also I would like to swap in a manual. This info is beside my current question, I just included it incase it would effect the solution to the problems.

Thanks again and I appreciate the replys!

Well, the ticking sound could be the lifters... 2gs are well known for lifter tick... One way to get rid of that is to try some Lucas Oil Stabalizer in your next oil change... the perminant fix is to upgrade to 3g Lifters... I havent done it, but I hear it works..

As for the exhaust... Black Smoke = rich.... since you are stock, the only thing that can cause the stock ECU to run that rich is a faulty O2 sensor... Id suggest you start there... They will run you upwards of $120 for a prewired direct replacement.

Good luck.

Good luck.

If the O2 is bad, especially the front, it should throw a CEL. If the O2 is bad, get it here:

$50-$70 depending on which one you get...both are direct "drop in".

Thanks for the quick replys!

I will look into the O2 sensor.

As for the lifters: If that is in fact the problem, should I replace them since I would like to run a reliable ~300whp in the future? Or would the synthetic oil fix that?

Thanks!
