I've been at it for 2 days now. I researched this to death and yes I have a Haynes manual but I've already noticed that 95-2001 eclipses are all different.

Here's the rundown. My wife's '99 Eclipse RS Automatic Non-Turbo 2.0L DOHC has a speedo problem.
The speedometer stopped working and when driving it you can feel it shift once (and hard) but after that it stays in gear the faster you go. If you come to a stop the RPMs drop to about 400-500 RPMs. It'll hover there for a second then it'll die. Only way to avoid this is to throw it in neutral and rev it a bit, then it idles fine. It ONLY does this when stopping.

Also, there is oil leaking (rear main seal?) all over the underbelly of the car...spewing on the catalyc converter and making it smoke. This car was running perfect until yesterday. I changed the oil a month ago and my Father-In-Law commented how clean it was under there. Not anymore. Also, the check Engine light comes on (wow cant imagine why) and the coolant seems to be dissapearing somewhere (not on the driveway ever).

I have a Haynes manual, but its very very vague. It covers Eclipse modelse 95-2001. Well I know for a fact that they are all different in there own way, so when they explain things they tell you what engine they are talking about but not the year. The only place they talk about the VSS is on the Manual Tranny section, showing a picture of a VSS that has a bolt holding it down on the Transaxel, they dont specify year. Her car looks nothing like the picture. And some of the info is just straight wrong, on another page they show a drawing of the 2.0L DOHC Auto engine bay, pointing to the exhaust manifold marked "P", legend says "Vehicle Speed Sensor". That is wrong, its not there.
The only other diagrams of the transmission showing the VSS are for the turbo model auto's only.
Help.
Can someone provide a diagram of were the VSS is on my car?
Tranny part number is K91536330511 Kokomo Transmission Plant
Sorry its so long, thanks

Here are some pics.

We've been looking under the intake tube on the side of the tranny...

Here's a close up of that corner. Can someone identify these pieces for me? Whats the black thing with 8(?)prongs?
I think thats the speed sensor but it seems like I need to take it out from underneath by removing the cover plate beneath the tranny. I'm afraid to break it if I twist. The part that is covered by tape is where this big weird sensor was connect to. What part is that? Click the picture below to see what I'm talking about.

Thanks for all the help you guys. Heres what I found out.
I finally found the location of the Speed Sensor. Yes, that was the problem and Guess what?
Its only a $22 part! It's amazing all the disinformation I encountered, which made this easy 15min job
into a 2 day ordeal. Haynes just flat out sucked for these cars. Its weird because its usually the best manual out there. Finally I went and looked at a chilton manual for 90-98 Eclipses. I found a diagram of the '98 2.0L Non-Turbo Automatic. Even though mine is a '99It showed me the same harness that I saw in my Tranny, and right there was "Output Speed Sensor" and "Input Speed Sensor". I ran home, and I got a message from someone else on this forum confirming what I just discovered. Was his post deleted? Well Thanks anyway whomever you were.
So I called the dealer and gave them my Vin# so they could search and give me
the correct part # and they were still wrong. The guy told me that it was $96 and since I didnt want to get screwed
again with disinformation I drilled him about it. I asked, "Ok, there should be two speed sensors, does it show you that? I need the Output one" and he says, "Who told you that? I never heard that!" I was just like uh-oh, I'm glad I drilled this guy. I made sure he had everything correct..."Is it for Auto '99 RS Eclipse/not 4WD?" He said "ya ya, this is the part you need, and we need to order it".

I didnt trust him, so I pulled my output sensor and called him back with what I thought was the part number on it.
"Its a hit" he says,
I ask "What does it say?"
"Automatic Speed Sensor" he says.
So I give him the part number to the input speed sensor, and he says its the same thing.
Anyways, they didnt have it in stock, so I called another dealer out of town, they didnt either.
But they were much nicer and helpful and I asked for them to see if they had the same part under Chrysler.
Yup! They had it! And in stock! $22...beats a $96 useless part anyday! I searched the part number that guy gave me for the wrong sensor, turned out it was for manual. Sheesh! I Even asked him twice if it was for Auto! And he gave me attitude and acted like he knew more than me.

Dont know why the first image got shrunk like that.
Anyways, it says from left to right
Input Speed Sensor, Output Speed Sensor.
The Big Black Thing is "Transaxle Range Sensor"
In the middle it says "Solenoid and Pressure Switch, shown removed here."
