I've been at it for 2 days now. I researched this to death and yes I have a Haynes manual but I've already noticed that 95-2001 eclipses are all different.
Here's the rundown. My wife's '99 Eclipse RS Automatic Non-Turbo 2.0L DOHC has a speedo problem.
The speedometer stopped working and when driving it you can feel it shift once (and hard) but after that it stays in gear the faster you go. If you come to a stop the RPMs drop to about 400-500 RPMs. It'll hover there for a second then it'll die. Only way to avoid this is to throw it in neutral and rev it a bit, then it idles fine. It ONLY does this when stopping.
Also, there is oil leaking (rear main seal?) all over the underbelly of the car...spewing on the catalyc converter and making it smoke. This car was running perfect until yesterday. I changed the oil a month ago and my Father-In-Law commented how clean it was under there. Not anymore. Also, the check Engine light comes on (wow cant imagine why) and the coolant seems to be dissapearing somewhere (not on the driveway ever).
I have a Haynes manual, but its very very vague. It covers Eclipse modelse 95-2001. Well I know for a fact that they are all different in there own way, so when they explain things they tell you what engine they are talking about but not the year. The only place they talk about the VSS is on the Manual Tranny section, showing a picture of a VSS that has a bolt holding it down on the Transaxel, they dont specify year. Her car looks nothing like the picture. And some of the info is just straight wrong, on another page they show a drawing of the 2.0L DOHC Auto engine bay, pointing to the exhaust manifold marked "P", legend says "Vehicle Speed Sensor". That is wrong, its not there.
The only other diagrams of the transmission showing the VSS are for the turbo model auto's only.
Help.
Can someone provide a diagram of were the VSS is on my car?
Tranny part number is K91536330511 Kokomo Transmission Plant
Sorry its so long, thanks
