Hi, new to the DSM world and can't wait to be apart of it. Well about a month ago I got a 91 eagle talon Tsi as my first car. Had a couple idle problems but some of that is worked out. The newest problem is a leak in the power steering lines. There is a leak in the metal lines that I'm pretty sure attach to the rack and pinion assembly. I was wondering where I would be able to get these lines, or if i could patch them up somehow. Thanks

The advance auto parts store around my was has them in stock, and fairly cheap, check your local parts store. Good luck.

Ok, now my next question would be has anyone ever replaced these pipes. Im trying to get the leaky one off and there doesnt seem like an easy way. Do I have to take the whole rack and pinion assembly out? There really isnt room for a rench and the only way I can get it out is by turning it at like one revolution per 5 min, and that would take forever to get it off. So I guess what I want to know is if I have to remove the whole rack and pinion assembly, and is so is there anyone that has done it before to let me know what I have to take off to take it off, cause it looks like there is alot in the way. Thanks

I just did this to my 90. I removed the rack because of rust and ease to work on. You will have to break the joint on the steering column. This is the hardest part, getting it back right. Other wise not to bad of a job. The lines I ordered on line for about $55. You need the car up high to get to the pump lines from under the car and also remove the sway bar and rack.

Brodie ( brodiedehass on dsmtuners) could probably lend some good insight on this. I believe he just installed power steering lines on his FWD Laser RS turbo.

go to a juck yard they mite have eclipses over ther take the pipe u need. it should be cheap

Don't go to the junkyard for new lines and such. You won't know the condition they're in, but you can bet its not perfect. Do it right the first time and spend a few extra $, and don't worry about having to do it again.

Make sure you use new crush washers at least or they will continue to leak and ruin your alternator :thumb:

Ok so I got everything ready for the new lines. I had to take off the exhaust, transfer case, sway bar, and this one plate. I couldnt get the actual rack out because it would come out. The only way to get it out would be to remove the driver side crossmember and I didnt think it would be to safe to remove that. So I'm just going to replace the lines while the rack is still in the car, not bolted up, its resting on the crossmembers. I just ordered the lines today and let me tell you they are not cheap. One line is like $52 dollars and the other one is $47. I can't believe how much they could cost. This deff isnt a easy job. Took me seven hours yesturday just to be able to take the power steering rack out, and its not even out. All I'm hoping is that everything will go back together and work. Man this is an expensive job.

Got the job done!! It took a long time but everything is well now. No leaks, no nothing. Power steering works like it should. I can't believe how expensive two little pipes could be. I'm just glad I got it fixed. It was def not an easy job.

Which one did you work on? I've replaced my passenger side line about two years ago, and now the drivers side is starting to leak. It's really annoying when the pump starts making this loud sort of humming noise when the reservoir is depleted. I would call Kragen or Autozone but I would probably be on the phone with them forever.
