Ok well i cant post in the drivetrain forum so this is the best place i could find. Anyways im planning on pulling the motor in my 2g this winter for a rebuild and want to know if anyone has heard of an evo 6 speed transmission in a 2G eclipse or if it is even possilbe to do. The reason im asking is because i relly like the 6-speed more than the 5.

It is totally flipped, if you do that, just get the EVO6 motor and the tranny, a lot of headaches will be involved and tons of money, but it can be done.

^^^Exactly. The new EVO motors are flipped 180* than our 4g63 varients. If the high RPMs crusing in 5th gear bothers you that much, spend the $300 and get the TRE taller 5th gear. I rode in a GS-T equipped with the taller 5th and it cruised at least 1k RPMs less than mine. Its the one thing I wish I would have done to my transmission when I had it off for the rebuild.

I got the 10% taller 5th gear in my TRE tranny....almost no difference. AWD's will always be geared shorter than FWD. Best translation I can make, because I have 2 AWD's is one runs 3300RPM at 70MPH, and the TRE equipped one runs 3,000RPM at 70MPH....no big difference.

They make a 16% one for you then.

I was interested in doing this as well but after talking to Shep while he had my tranny I decided against it. He said it reduces it about 300 rpm. I would rather just cruise at 75, save gas, less noise (3 inch exhaust kinda drones) and less wear and tear on the engine. Just my $.02.

cant anyone say something more original than "just my $.02"? haha... just kidding...

what is TRE and where can I find them? I def want to have my tranny rebuilt pretty soon so its nice and strong...

TRE (Team Rip Engineering) www.teamrip.com

IMO the 10% taller gear is only worth it if you live in flat terrain. I commuted 45 miles, one way, to work for 9 months and put it in for gas mileage but my commute consist of hills so the engine worked harder (waste gate opened much sooner) on the hills and over-all mileage didn't improve.

However, I took a long road trip (mostly flat terrain) and mpg went from 24.5 to 29.7

TRE doesn't have the 16% taller gear on their website anymore, but they may have it if you ask.

Why do you like the 6 speed because it sounds cool?

It's actually the lesser of the two choices in the Evo. (Read: So it would not be smart)

If you are doing it to be cool and impress the local 4h babes just put a shift knob from a 6speed car in yours and tell them it's a 6 speed. If they ask for proof then just shift 1,2,3,4,5,R. If they are dumb enough to even think it's a 6 speed in the first place this will work.

Could you please tell me more about the TRE taller 5th gear for my 1997 Eclipse GST 5-speed? I am VERY interested in doing this as well as putting in an LSD differential into my 54,000 mile heavily modded 97 GST car. PLS tell me everything and anything that you can about the taller 5th gear, including how to get in touch with TRE if you happen to know that. I would also LOVE to put in a 6-speed, but I am not finding anything about that for my car. Proabably can not be done without chaning to an EVO motor and trans. as well. TOO EXPENSIVE to do, like spoending mega $$$$$$$$$$'s. THANKS!!! RKP

Just to throw this out there. The 6-speed evo trans is weaker than the 5-speed trans. Nissan is the same way.

Contact TRE for any info. You have to remember, this thread is from 07, not many people are gonna remember it. The guy above pretty much explained anything you need to know. It dropped him 1k rpm's or so.

I don't know if this is an option or not. I found this 6 speed kit for the evo 1,2,3, which has transmissions on the correct side as ours. Here is the link Albins Off Road Gears :: Products Overview :: Transaxle :: Transfer Gears :: Gear Design :: Performance Gears :: Gearsets :: Dog Gears :: Performance Transaxle :: Sequential Transaxle

I don't know if the kit would work in a 1g transmission or not. If the 1g awd is the same or very similar to the evo 1,2,3, it may work. I don't know if it can be used in a 2g or not or if a 2g would work with a 1g bellhousing. This is the only option that may have some merit. Just looking under the Mitsubishi housing under the above link.

Unless the transmission case is made bigger to accommodate the extra gear then the trans will just eat itself up. Same way the Evo's do.
