Smoking when cold, not when hot

Edmonton,
Hey, I have a strange thing going on with my car, and I really hope its not the head gasket. When the car is cold, I am getting more exhaust than normal, specially if I rev it up a bit. The smoke is fairly white. After I've driven the car around for a bit and its warmed up, and park it, there is no smoke at all. I can even rev it up while its neutral, no smoke.

Any clues!? I really hope its not the head gasket. Is there any way for me to tell if it is without doing a compression test?

P.S. this may or may not be related, but at around the same time I noticed the smoke, my thermostat failed open.

You sure its not just from the condensation in your exhaust? If you are that concerned about it I would just go ahead with a compression test.

Like stated before me, do the compression test, thats the only way to know if its your headgasket or not, unless you wanna pull your head and check it visually.

As long as the exhaust doesn't have a kind of sickly sweet smell, you're probably just putting out a lot of water vapor. I had a cheesmo aftermarket t-stat come apart and it just let coolant out to the radiator all the time. It took forever to warm up and put a lot of water vapor out the tailpipe as it warmed up. I put a new thermostat from the dealer in, and the steamin' went away. As a side bonus, fuel mileage went waaay up.
Good luck, and let us know how it turns out

I see you're in the frozen north, cold without the heater, eh?

Yeah. It's more like spring right now though, and I the coolant temp only drops to around 60 degrees, so I still get heat.
