Timing belt job done - thank god and the timing seems all right. Well when putting the harmonic balancer back on (torqued it - by the way what are the torque specs, the haynes book tells me one thing and the vfaq guide tells me different) it didn't line up with the main drive pulleys for Alternator (well it did mostly for that) and didn't line up with the power steering/AC pulleys, its still slight sticking ou ta bit more, but just enough to throw them forward.

Before I had this problem - the alternator belt can't jump so it just shreds and the AC/Power Steering Belt just keeps jumping forward (to the left of the motor, because the balancer I guess was still forward more)

When I took it out tonight, we came to a slow down after hammering it to see if anything will break (don't ask) and then we heard the squeeling (thought it was my water pump going again (I was like... I just fixed THAT!!)) and it turned out that my AC/PoSteer Belt jumped a thread ( scared the **** outta me when I heard that sound tonight RIGHT after doing my timing belt job but all was cool)

I've done some searching and it may be the balancer? But like I said.. we hit that thing on there PRETTY hard.. and torqued it the best we could and STILL couldn't get it to line up, so the balancer is still out of line with the rest of the pullies still (dang...) so maybe the engine isn't lining up right so the pulley seems to be out farther than it should (doesn't seem like it, had the problem before we jacked the engine and did the job).

Who knows - but all I know it shreds the alternator belt that can't move and jumps the AC/PoSteer belt that can move.. don't feel like getting new belts.. any resolutions?

Sounds like you have a pulley inside out maybe? Bolting it up the other way will make it stick out 1/2 inch in the other direction. Not sure if that's the problem but I've done it before on a 4g63.

I've done this also on my 4G63 with the waterpump pulleys...sounds like a good 1st item to check.

Or something is holding up the harmonic balancer from going all the way on. I seem to hear it happening a lot with the 420a motors. You may want to pull it back off, lube it real well and try again to see if it helps to slide on easier. And on the 420a, I dont think you can mistake the way it goes on.

I had a hell of a time getting it backon the '96.

Wolf's right, you can't mistake the way it goes on. Hmm I'll try lubing it up, I did the first time, might want to try hitting it with a rubber mallet.

Would be a good idea, as hard as they are to take off, it seems almost as hard to get them all the way seated again. Good luck Bro.:thumb:

Yes - still odd though because it did it before I took off the harmonic balancer.. which makes things more difficult..

Are you convinced it's not another pulley, some accesory? The one I had on backwards was like the water pump or something. Don't recall, but it was obvious when looking from above, one pulley was not lining up. Flipped it over and it sat in line perfectly. I didn't think I could be that dumb, but it was an easy mistake...and fix.

It would have to be the p.s. pump, a/c or alt, as the water pump on the 420a turns with the timing belt. But it is worth a look. But when the guy brought the '96 down, he had the p.s. and a/c belts off due to the same problem. Interesting.
