I have a strange coolant leak coming from under the elbow where the upper radiator pipe connects to the head (the piece that has the cap on it). The leak comes and goes, and stops leaking if I open up the cap and release the pressure. I cannot tell exactly where the leak is coming from, it is somewhere under the piece that bolts to the head. What exactly is that piece called and what can I do to fix this inconsistent leak?

You have the thermostat housing and the another piece that houses some sensors, don't know the technical name. But the way to solve the leak is to fix it. Obviously let the car cool down and start pulling the thing apart. Use some sealer to reseal it and bolt it back together. Simple.

Never hurts to use some cheap Waterpump gasket sealent when sealing everything back up. You can get a little pack of it at the registers at Advance Auto for under $1. A dollar well spent, IMO.

Yea this piece, if it is the one next to the head, is a non-gasket connection from the factory. It just uses Mitsu grey sealer, stuff works great. But reqular RTV works good, or as suggested, the small $1 pack by the counter. The t-stat has a rubber seal. Also there are several small water jumper hoses in that same location for the turbo and various other jumpers, might check them also.
