Need Help - Just finished rebuild

I just finished the rebuild. I had it running before and no noise at all. Then tonight i was gonna let it idle for those 20 minutes. It started just fine, then it died just dropped rpms really low then died. I started it up again and reved it to keep it going, I got a really weird noise. I found a vid on the site with the same noise. Could it be a spun bearing beings that this rebuilt engins has run no more than 10 minutes??? If i did What can i do... did i catch it early enough to stop any damage. when i checked the oil i drained into a pan it was metalicy, like a glitter, and people on here said that that is perfectly normal right after a rebuild.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The car is a 6 bolt 1992 eagle talon tsi awd A/T

The symptoms you describe sure sound like a bearing failure of some kind :barf: , either from inadequate lubrication or machining/assembly error.

What kind of oil pressure are you getting?
If you pulled the oil pump, did you reinstall with assembly lube packed inside to help prime?
Did you use assembly lube on the bearing journals?
When you first started the car did you pull the MPI fuse and crank to prime the oil system?
Did you reassemble the main caps in the right order?

Small flecks of metal is normal in the pan, large pieces are not. If you think there is cause for concern, I'd not second guess yourself and pull the pan to see if any obvious damage. May also want to pull the oil filter and cut open to see what you'll find.

If it is inded a spun rod, you'd have caught it early on and likely a crank polishing is the most you'd need :dsm:
 
We did some more tests last night and found that when idleing it made no noise. when reving a little bit it also made no noise coming down. The only time it made noise is when we reved it higher to im guessing 3500. Another thing im thinkin.. What would it sound like if the balance shaft bearings weren't installed properly. What would this type of failure sound like?? Would it sound similar to rod knock? Im gonna drop the pan today and push on the balance shafts and see.. if it is them im going to pull them and get an eliminator kit.
 
Oil pressure seems normal. When i start the car in a matter of ###### 10 seconds the oil pressure gauge goes to the first hash and stays. When i started the car for the first time I pulled the spark plugs and unplugged the injectors, then i turned it over for 2 10 second intervals.
 
What noise would an oil pump make If it werent primed? And how could you test this??
 
The car was killed during idleing due to a bad FPS. I blocked it up and started it again and now it idles just fine. (?knock?) noise is still there on the decceleration of the motor.

It would not necessarily make an audible noise, but you'd see that your oil pressure would not build quickly (or at all) during this critical phase of engine break in.

You seem like a competant mechanic, can you pinpiont (mechanics stethascope) where the noise is emulating from? If from the top, you could have lifter tick (usually low oil pressure related) or possibly a bent valve (did you depressurise the lifters before first starting up if they were removed)? Also are all your timing belt timing marks still spot-on? A cam off a few teeth will meet with the piston.

If coming from the bottom end likely a rod bearing.

Also you note the installation of EVO pistons on 1G Rods in your profile. Was the machinist someone familiar with the modifications necesssary to the 1G Rod :confused: :dsm:
 
The machinist knew all of this and did the proper modifications to the 1g rod. If I am correct on this would you not hear lifter tick at all times of engine running? Oil pressure is fine like i stated before, so i think that rules out oil pump. Another thing I'm thinking is maybe the mechanic didn't put in the balance shaft bearings or, or maybe just one of them:sosad: ?¿¿ (not good on my part for overlooking something that small) Would this noise be concurrent to that problem??
 
I come back to the thread with amazing news. The noise is gone. I decided to go over it one more time. While under the car when it was idling i found that the noise came from the tranny side of the engine. So i had a thought. I figured it had something to do with the drive plate (being optimistic). So i stopped the engine and went under and found that the drive plate bolts were kinda loose ( i mean i couldn't move them with my fingers but when i put a wrench on it. So i tightened the hell out of those 4 bolts.... started it up and it runs like a champ. ( ONE HAPPY DSMER RIGHT HERE)
