belt breaking problem

hey friends i didnt have much time to research this much but on my 98 talon tsi awd i have had my belt break 5 times now i have had it to 3 shops where one had me replace my crank pulley and it still broke... i lose my power steering and yea its hard to drive then.. so i was wondering if anyone has had it happen like this ... im tired of buying belts and wasting money... any ideas or suggestions would be great

Exactly which belt are you breaking? When installing them usually within 3 or 4 days you will have to re-tighten them. If left loose, they overheat due to slippage and they will break. Use a good quality belt such as Gates. If all these things are done and you are still breaking belts, I'd look at the belt to see if it's being damaged externally from a foreign object. Although I can't imagine what it would be. Hand spin all your pulleys to feel for roughness or unusually hard resistance.

well i had another person look at it and he thinks that my alternator is locking up on occasions and that is what is doing it... i really dunno bout that but he says i need a new alternator.... i say thats not the problem anyways thanks for the suggestions so far
