i just did the first start after i got done rebuilding the engine and the belt on the alternator is squeakig and smoking, when i shut the car off, i felt all the pulleys and the only one that is hot is the alternator's. Is this cause from not being tightened fully or what???

yea most Likely You Didnt Tightin the Alternator belt ,check to see if the belt is loose if it is just tightin it up and you should be just fine. but if its realy thight that can also cause the alternater to smoke, but most likelythe belt is just loose .

do you know what the "belt play" measurement should be, like 3/4 an inch or somethin like that???
