Hi there dsmers :dsm:

we'll, i've been reading some reports at the forum for the last 3hours, and i think i finally got some good information on what might be going on on my 1g turbo tranny. So, i just need some kind of "confirmation" from some experienced folks to decide what to do!! Im talking about a 94 1g gs turbo fwd.

1) i got difficult 1st from idle and had to play 1-2 to get it working;
2) grinding 2nd gear when trying 1-2 and 3-2 at higher RPMs than 2k.
3) the 1st pops off sometimes when i feel it didnt had "full" clutching.
4) i have also a "singing tranny", when doing 1st and 2nd gear acceleration. It happened 2 or 3 times in the last months, mostly of them when i go really *bad* with my car for about 20-30 minutes. That singing sound, that goes up with higher RPMs, goes away in some days and comes back again next time i do the same thing;
5) all other gears works perfectly.

1), 2) and 3) started after i changed my clutch for a remanufactured one (bad quality maybe?), and sometimes (2 months ago) i got it working withou grinding/popping off. On the last months, i dont even try anymore to try not to broke the tranny. 4) started since i realized what this car can do, not only drive to work :rocks:

What i have seen in the forum:

1) try some tranny oil change: already done that, but maybe i had the wrong choices?
2) try some syncmesh, but again, maybe done the wrong choice!
3) bleed the clutch, adjust it again: never done that, could it helps even if the problem only happens with 1st and 2nd?
4) try some shifter adjustment (http://www.vfaq.com/mods/shifter3.html): never done that before too, and it seems that it wont help;
5) bad syncros: very know 2nd gear ("the bi***") problem for dsm's. May car has only 53k miles, so i think syncros should not be the problem by its age.....but its seems like!
6) try 2-3 times clutching before changing 1-2 or 3-2: never done that, gonna try tomorrow;
7) try changing 1-2 at 4.5-5k RPM, if it goes nice, than it should (or not, i dont remember, too much information for today!!) be the syncro: never done that also, but quite sure that wont work. Also gonna try tomorrow
9) try this http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wNjkyNjgzNnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE=.jpg
i forgot how it is called: already done that, but it didnt help (maybe a little bit, but not enough)
10) anything else?

A-N-Y help would be apreciated!!

best regards,

Michel

may i post this thread in the tech - drivetrain forum?!

You could have bent the forks for the 1st and 2nd gear. You also may have a bad 1st and 2nd gear synchros which is a common problem as far as I am aware of. In a case like this, to replace a synchro, you could probley take it to a shop and get it done for around $200-$300. If you have bent forks though on the otherhand, you might just want to get a whole new tranny. If you had a bad synchro, you would not be able to shift into that gear. But being that your grinding a littlle bit and are having troubles getting into 1st and 2nd, leads me to that you could have bent some of the forks.

Nice to hear that....or not! heheheh

What you said makes a lot of sense, since sometimes i can shift to 1st and 2nd without grinding (in a very lucky situation). Is it possible to change only the forks? Can it buy them at Mitsu like the synchros? Or even changing the forks wouldnt be a good ideia?

I was already catching some material and instructions to rebuild the tranny (by my self, believe it), but if the forks would be the real problem and have no solution, that idea is gone :(

Thanks anyway!

Michel

I have the smae problem.. Try pulling into second straight down almost with a quick wiggle.. I was told My Syncro was wore down, I can shift it most of the time without a grind. The owner before my must of been doing alot of power shifting, not using the clutch! I'm not sure since I dunno the owner. Update this so I can see if Mine is a bent fork or a worn syncro

IntactTSI- are you saying that having bad motor mounts will cause a bad 1 to 2 shift

Yes, the idea behind this is that if the mount is bad, the engine can shift forward/back when under load, or letting off the throttle (Ever notice when the hood is open and someone revs the engine, the engine tilts?). This would be amplified by bad mounts potentially causing the shift linkage on the tranny to pull/push, so not engaging all the way, or pulling it out of the next gear when the throttle is pressed. Make sense ? :)

For me, my issue was caused by both bad forks and synchros. If that's the case, I'd would NEVER get them from Mitsu as they will charge you out the ass and kneecaps for something a place like TRE can provide at a much cheaper cost.
