A friend and I changed my head gasket, and I think we did something to my Power Transistor. We looked in the service manual, and it said to do the ohm meter test with a 1.5v battery. It tested only HALF good. Is there a chance that we could open the case and fix it, or is it a lost cause?

I found out I can go up to a local junk yard and pick one up for $50 (a lot better than buying one for $150). I don't think the guy knew what it was ;)

Pretty sure its all solid-state....which makes it unrepairable.

The NT coil packs and transistor are the same , tho

Happy hunting. :)

By 1/2 good, do you mean that one set of pins test okay, and the other set is n/g? . . The symptom would be that only one coil pack is firing, which means that only two cylinders are getting spark. The engine has the power of an old lawn mower and the tach falsely reads 1/2 the real rpm's. . . Yes ? No?
I opened my power transistor when 1/2 was bad and found that there was a porcelain circuit board inside that is impossible to fix, with connections that come apart just by opening the thing.... so I totally recked it. I spent $142 [last year's price] to get a new one. I'm an electronics technician. I'm supposed to know how to do these things - and I still screwed it up !! Don't open it !
1990's use a different unit than 1991-1994 so make sure that you get the right one....... I think that yours has a 6 pin connector while mine had 7 pins. See page 8-151 to see how it works [if you're using the book that has the test on page 8-160].

Thanks for the input.

My unit has 5 pins. The car won't fire at all. The engine cranks and cranks, but refuses to fire. And yes, pings 1-3 test fine, but 3-5 test bad. I found out that it was solid when I took it off the solid ground (I'm guessing?) that it was attached too.

Now one other thing that we thought was a bit off is that the coil plug tested at 1.1, and the manual said that it should be rougly around .7-.9 I believe. Is that anything to be worried about? I don't want to fry that too.

I'm hoping that's all that is wrong with my car, I'd REALLY like see how much power this thing has (and I want to race my dad, he has a V6 Honda Accord EX)

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

I've never seen a five pin unit.... so I just don't know how to help. Also I didn't realize that the engine will not run at all !! I don't think the 1.1 thing is important right now.... but I do think that some electronic test equipment has to be used to determine if pulses are going into the power transistor at all. The basic electrical flow is.... sensor [at top of engine - passenger side] sends timing info to ECU, pulses come out of ECU to power transistor unit, unit 'amplifies' pulses and sends them to coil pack primaries, huge voltage comes out of coil secondaries to spark plugs.

5-pins are 90s, 91-99 use a 8-pin connector with 7-pins. The coil packs have a 4-pin connector versus a 3-pin too. You can, however, use the packs themselves out of another year.

But 90s PT are different than 91-99.

I was just going by what was in the service manual. I'm praying that's the only thing that went wrong because I don't have a lot of money to spend :p

My dad talks about the timing belt on the cars a lot. I know that they have shared engine space, and if the belt snaps your engine is pretty much done. He acts like it is going to snap every 10 miles though. How often do you really need to worry about a belt on these cars?

hey i have a 5 pin transistor off my 90 awd. i will sell it. i need one for my 91 fwd, 8 pin connector with 7 pins. anyone have one let me know.
