After a comprehensive timing belt and associated parts overhaul I now have a humming sound coming from one of the belts or pulleys. With a piece of tubing I have been able to eliminate the power steering pulley, alternator pulley and both the intake and exhaust sprockets. The humming seems to be coming from beneath the timing belt cover but I cannot tell for sure. The sound increases in pitch as the RPM's increase.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? I have checked the belt tensions and they are all within the reccomended adjustment.

TIA

A bad water pump will hum. Check that. But it could really be anything, this is a hard problem to diagnose without actually being there. Anything that spins can hum. One of the timing belt pulleys could be bad also. Just keep checking, and maybe pick up a cheap automotive stethescope to help pinpoint the problem, it'll be easier than using the rubber hose.

I agree a whole bunch. It may be the sound right before a timing belt idler pulley siezes up. Check that one out!

Good Luck

I really hope its not any of those because I just replaced the timing belt, balance belt, all drive belts, balance belt tensioner, auto tensioner, idler pulley, the other pulley (cant remember name) and water pump. The only things that didnt get replaced were the actual pulleys on the alternator, power steering pump, crank pulley and intake and exhaust sprockets.

Good Job. However rare it may be, one of them could be bad. Try removing all your accessory belts one at a time and run the engine. If it disappears after one of the belts was removed, you found it. If it's still there, remove the timing cover. Put the crank pulley and associated parts back on and start the engine. Get a mechanic's stethescope and see if you can pinpoint the source of the sound.

Let us know.

Good Luck

Does it sound like a Supercharger????? Mine makes that sound every morning and I have never had a pump go out or anything.

I've faked so many people out by saying I have a supercharger;) It's crazy what kids will believe now a days:tease:

IM having a very similar problem.

Replaced:
Timing belt
Crank Pulley
Serp belt
PS/WP belt

I get a rattleing noise when i drive. like a pulley. doesnt make it when i press in the clutch and rpms drop. Also the belt squeeks around 2k to 3k. and its really loud and thats when the "rattleing" starts to happen.

Noise increases with rpms.

i have the same humming sound coming from that side. and i just recently found out that the o-ring for the water pump is blown and leaking a bit. ive had a few dsm mechanics from the area look at it, they are saying its either pulleys cranks or my oil pump. when i open the oil cap and give the car a little rev i see the oil spraying out of the oil cap. any ideas?
