ok i cant figure this out. I blew a head gasket. I was driving down the rd at 55 mph on cruise control. And i noticed my knock guage (boost guage) go funny and peak at high knock. But engine ran fine. I thought it was phantom knock. Something from the valve train. So i just went on normally. The knock would come and go. And im still on cruise control. And i get to like 5 min from my house and it starts to run like crap. And i notice a faint white smoke out the tail pipe. Thats when i shut it off and pull over. i try to crank it at the side of the road and nothing happens car wont start and coolent comes out my leaking dp gasket. so i pull the head off and find that the Head gasket blew between cyl 1 and 2. Im like how did this happen. Im only running 15 psi on a 14b 6bolt engine. And im running it on the rich side also. And i hardly push the car. So today i go to measure the head for warpness and i find this wierd gouge out of the cyl head between cyl 1 and cyl 2. And its sortta on the smooth side. I dont know where it came from or what caused it. Head has only 10 k on it. See if any of u guys can take a look at it for me and shed some light on this issue.

PICS ARE LOCATED FURTHER DOWN THE POST

Thanks
Dan

Picture was not there. However, I would take the head to a reputable trusted machine shop and let them check it out, make the appropriate repairs and put it back on assuming it passes his scrutiny. Torque the head down in proper sequence. Replace any components you are not sure about. IE belts, hoses, etc. Also, if you have green anti freeze in the engine you will most likely be the victim of secondary expense in your o2 sensors as the silicones in anti freeze damages them. I know this is not good news, just trying to help. Good Luck

does anyone know anything about this.

Unfortunately, that looks as if it has been blown for quite some time. The gouge you see is actually where the head melted in between the 2 cylinders from the gasket being blown. A resurface will not fix it because it looks very deep. Your only real fix would be to replace the head or have it welded and resurfaced.

And #1 looks like it had water getting into it. Thats why that combustion chamber is so clean. The burn between cylinders had nothing to do with water entering the cylinder.

if that burn didnt cause the coolent to enter the cylinders then what caused the coolent to get into the cylinders. Because none of the passage ways on the head gasket were blown open

Thanks

Im not sure which passage the coolant came from. The burn doesnt pass through a coolant passage. And if was the cause, the #2 cylinder would be as clean as the #1. Take another pic of the head just on the #1 cylinder and surrounding passages and post it up. Some of us might be able to see something you might have missed. Also, a pic of the hg in the same area would be good.

Looking at the pics you posted, I would guess that the water came in from the lower right corner(as looking in the pic) of the gasket. I can see now that some coolant made it into the #2 cylinder but that was from the the gap from #1 to#2 cylinder.

After seeing the pictures I agree. You probably are looking at a new head. What causes this is once the head gasket integrity is breeched, a flame from every compression stroke not only pushes the piston down it also goes through the head gasket between cylinders. Enough of these and the flame actually due to heat and force removed a little metal every time the cylinder fires. This case being between cylinders it gets a double dose.

The cause can be several things. Overheat can warp head, the head gasket can give out due to old age and miles, too much boost, etc. All you can do is replace all the damaged components, look for possible contributors and put it back together. I would have someone look at the block to make sure it is ok too at this point as it was right there during all this burning. Good Luck

Where did coolent come in. Im looking and i dont see anything. Can u give me a reference on what cylinder and location according to that cyl. Breach happened between cyl 1 and cyl 2 so that u guys know.

thanks
Dan

Yea i showed the head to a tech at work and he said its smoked. As for the block its in great shape. You can tell something happened there but nothing wrong with the spot still smooth and not burnt away.
