POS!!! Faiied for 'visible smoke' coming out the tailpipe WTF
Car burns some oil and produces smoke out the tailpipe when idling at red lights and a puff of it is emmitted when I take off but then clears out immediately. But the mechanic let the car idle for awhile and the smoke built up and didn't clear out since the test was done with wheels on rollers in 3rd gear at 2200 rpm so it didn't clear out like it normally does when driving down the road. Does Anyone know what this is indicative of? It burns about a quart every 300-500 mi. (10/40 dino)
AND when oil level drops 1/2- 1 qt low on dipstick it basically stops smoking altogether.
Cold compression test is 190's on 3 cyl and 1 cyl 182 psi -- '92 2.0 N/T.
I'm thinking if I put 20/50 in and at 1 qt low it shouldn't smoke 'visibly' based on what I mentioned above.
What should I add to gas tank to help with emmissions for when I go back? Emissions test was aborted because of the 'visible smoke' issue.
On a side note, I'm really pissed at the guy because I told him once the oil level drops that 1/2 - 1 qt below proper level it doesn't smoke and he says he never heard of such a thing WTF I already know this is the case with this car so I asked him to take a qt out and see but he refused so I'll have to do it myself and go back. He says it HAS TO BE bad rings and that a compression test is only good for checking valves
AND that there's no way a compression test or cylinder leak down test can indicate if rings are the problem and the only way to tell if anyhing in the bottom half of engine (rings) is bad is by listening to engine and by looking at tailpipe for smoke
He says I must need a ring job if my compression #'s are good and was adamant that a compresion test is only good for checking valves!?! This guy is full of MANURE right
AND he never heard of a car smoking at idle an then clearing out once the car takes off. I've seen this with other cars out there in addition to my own WTF
(
! I'd run this pos N/T 150,000 mi crapbox into a tree before replacing rings on it)
Anyhow, he did start the emmissions test and I watched the machine and it looked like everything was in the green but he aborted the test because of that 'visible smoke' which was not that bad at all IMO.
$75 and a fail sticker sucks a$$
and I'm pissed but when I go back I don't pay anything so hopefully with that heavy weight oil and a ?gas additive? emmissions will be fine and 'visible smoke' will be not a problem.
BTW, I would've dropped the oil level before going to inspection today but I idled the car in my driveway and loked at tailpipe and no problems. Like I said it builds up smoke after idling for awhile but clears right out once the rpms get up there in 1st gear. Bad valve seal(s)??
