Ignition double-check

I've been having an intermittent starting problem recently; it appears that 1 and 4 will decide not to fire. As with all gremlins, it only does it when I have no testing gear handy. Determined that it's 1 and 4 by turning off the injectors (datalogger) while it's exhibiting the behaviour.

I'm fairly certain it's the primary coilpack, as DTC#44 is present and the tach isn't going crazy (so I assume that the pack is getting the 'fire' signal, as the tacho interface is on the pack). Minor occasional stumbles/misfires at idle. Only concern I have is that I patched together my CAS after noticing some wire-insulation damage... but as far as I know, the CAS puts out a sine wave, rather than a 'fire 4, 2, 3, 1' signal.

So should I worry about the CAS, or am I right in guessing that the primary pack is dying?

Borrowed a CAS from a local DSMer, fixed the problem right up. Looks like I'll be buying a new one tomorrow. Just have to decide between junkyard again ($100), ACDelco ($450), and Satan ($600 + special order only).

Anyone have input? In addition, the new CAS fixed the idle surging problem as well. Putting on the old one brought it right back. Weird.

Always good to see when someone really diagnoses and perform repairs on their own. I hope it is something that you learned in here. Then all this darn typing by everyone is not for fingertip exercise. 'o) And yes, the Cam Angle Sensor does tell it when. That's why it's adjustable so it can set the time. If it can do this, then it can surely be assumed that it can tell each cylinder when to fire. Great Job
