rear main seal(tranny) came off!

I sent my car to dynamic turbo to get tuned on the dyno. when they where doing the first run the rear main seal came off and oil basically drained out of the car.what are some of the resons this could have happened other then a bad seal? and around how much to repair?thanks for the help.
 
If there are a lot of miles on the engine the seal most likely just got worn out and finally broke off. If you have the knowledge/mechanical skills replacing wouldn't be that hard, just a little time consuming. You should be able to pick up a new seal at most auto parts stores for relatively cheap. Also if you do replace it yourself make sure no pieces from the old seal are floating around in the engine or you'll just have bigger problems down the road.
 
Honestly, I would go to satan and get a rear main seal from them. I'm having mine replaced right now and the shop told me with an important seal that I should just get it from Mitsu. It's like $15 from them.
 
Well with FWD, dropping the tranny isn't that difficult.

If you have any technical knowledge at all, get a repair manual and do it yourself. Since your clutch/flywheel has to come off anyways, you might as well look into replacing that while your down there. But yea, the part is only like $15, it just requires a few hours of labor.

The outer portion of the seal is a pretty firm fit, even if the inner portion of the seal itself was "worn out" then the outer portion would still hold.

I would be looking at what caused such a big increase in crankcase pressure (outside of beating it on the dyno!)... PCV and breather system, piston blowby due to worn/incorrectly installed rings and such.

There are different quality seals out there. The OEM seal would be the safest bet, especially considering the labor involved in accessing it.

Let me ask you a question. How is your pcv routed? Stock or into a catch can?
