My recent purchase of a 90 Tsi AWD for $700 bucks really was worth $700 bucks.
I just about had the thing back together and even had it running, when I notice the oil pump was leaking really bad. I got a new seal and that did not work. I took off the TB (for about the 20th time) and tried some silicone on the mating parts of the oil pump shaft and sprocket shaft. Started it again and it still leaked. So I decided to start all over and take the front cover off (which requires taking off Xfer case, left driveshaft, oil pan, frame members, alternator, oil pick up tube, exhaust, and maybe some other stuff I forgot).
This time I took the oil pump itself apart. Upon further inspection, I found that the flat part of the sprocket that mates with the flat part of the shaft is worn crooked, so there is way to much play and the oil leaks right through. This has to be the oddest problem and I bet the only one ever recorded with these cars.
The crankshaft sprocket was also worn funny. See pics below

My idea is that the balance shafts were 180 degrees out of phase for a long, long time, and causing this odd wear pattern.
Just FYI for some interesting reading for you.
