Guys,

Was in my friends VR4 and we were coasting down the freeway at about 130kph in 5th gear when we backed off for an exit. As he backed off the gas, we heard a fair loud bang / clunk and the car jerked for a split second. He put the car into neutral and then tried to select 4th and it wouldnt go as we heard crunching noise, so we coasted to the side of the road and stopped.

Once the car was stopped we tried to select 1st and take off. The car engaged the clutch and tried to go forward but would not move. We only gave gas to about 2500 rpm and stopped trying. We thought it was the transfer case as we were on an decline and the car was in neutral with the handbrake off and it did not roll forward. We then tried reverse and the same thing happend, (car tried to go in reverse) but would not move.

We called the flat bed tow truck, when he went to wench the car on the flat bed, the car struggled to move and then jerked forward as if what ever was locked came loose. Got the car home and took it off the trailer and the car drove.

In the morning we found some grass and did launch. It seemed as though all 4 wheels did engage and we saw ripped grass at each corner. We then went on the tarmac and did a 5000 rpm launch and again, the car hooked up, the front spun for a second which it normally does but all seemed normal.

Im a bitt baffled, but Im thinking that a bearing may have gone in the transfer case and then got jammed somewhere, but then let go when to tow truck forced it out. Im also worried to let him drive the car around but he needs it for work.

I did a search and I saw this:

So we pulled off the gearbox cover anyway. Fortunately (unfortunately!), the 36mm bolt that hold fifth gear was tight! Now the car has developed a whine thats coming from the front so Im thinking again it might be the transfer case again. The wine can be heard the faster you travel and is more noticable when accelerating.

Has anyone had a transfer case 1/2 let go ? i.e. It still works but is noisey?

if u can ingage gears then check to see if ur cv joint blew....when mine blew it made the same noise...

Thanks for the suggestion. If the CV joint blew, whats the easiest way of checking it ? I know if you do a full lock on the wheel one way or another they usually "click" if there on the way out?
