so i bought a 95 tsi, after having it for a 3 days tranny starts to make a noise, trans shop says its the throwout bearing, i was deffinitly alittle pissed about that, plus the throttle position sensor was shot so the idol was everywhere, so i get home from the trans shop, watch tv for an hour, then go to work, start the car and it sounds horrible, it sounded like a tractor, so i shut it off and try again, it won't start, so after trying everything i could, i get it towed to a shop i always go to, what happened was that the timing jumped and all the valves smashed, what are the odds that there is not damage to the pistions and cylinders? i am wondering what would ahve caused the timing to jump like this? any ideas about this situation?

A loose or worn timing belt, the balance shaft belt breaking and throwing the belt off, there are many situations that could cause this. Pull the head off and see what damage is done. You can also pull the plugs and shine a light in the cylinders to get a pretty good idea of damage to pistons but can never be sure till you take the head off. Had this happen to me not to long ago, hope all goes well.

There's a good chance the pistons are fine... So you need to rebuild the head, and get some new valves. You'll have better luck buying another head if you are paying that shop to do it.

how about the rods, any chance that one could be bent, i am going to pull the head tomorrow cause i found one at a decent price to swap, is there any way to tell if there is a bent rod without putting it all togeather and listening for knock or vibrations?

rods...i dought it...if ur timing skipped then most deff ur valves are bent and need replacement...untill u take apart the head u wont really know the extent of the damage..i've heard of people just have bent valves and others with messed up pistons. Just take it apart and you'll know.

well the head is off and the pistons have gashes in them from where the valves hit, is it a deffinite that the pistons need replacement, the cylinder walls are still nice and smoothe, the gashes are just in the top of the pistons, what do you guys think?
