Car won't start...think its fuel problems

Ok, so I was driving home last night with a just rebuilt transmission. Still kind of hurting over the $2000 hit, but hey what can you do when third gear desides to chip a tooth and screw up your entire tranny. Any ways I figure my 6 month string of head aches was over,(due to a turbo blowing, and desiding to up grade to a 16G, and then finding out about all the fuel supporting mods.)
Any way I'm at a stop light. As I start to go the car feels wierd, like it was lossing power or something. Then I started to here a loud clicking noise. My first thought was "Oh, S*#%! That had better not be the tranny again." So I tried other gears with no change to the sound, ok so it's not the tranny. I deside to pull over, and just as I do the car dies. I try to start it, nothing. It will turn over, but it won't catch. Well, I know my gas gauge does not work well, pehaps the car ran out of gas with out the little yellow gas light turning on. The gas light works, or at least it did. So I walk over to a gas station, barrow a gas can and put a gallon in the tank. The car still cranks, but it won't catch. So I think, well maby if I did run it out of gass, the computer my be screwed up. So I disconect the battery for a minute, as I reconect it I here that clicking noise again, but only temporarily. The car will still turn over, but won't catch.
I tied it again this morning, and the car turns over, sounds like it wants to catch, but won't. I know I'm getting spark, and am 98% sure I'm getting fuel, but I'm at a loss as to what is wrong. If any of your guys have ideas I'm definatly open to them.

Unless you want to just buy a highly moddifed 97 GSX, with a minor problem :sneaky:
 
Tested for sprak, and it was fine. Haven't pulled the plugs yet, but I figure, they're less than a year old. And the clicking sound was coming form under the hood. It kind of soundled like it was near to or under the intake manifold.
 
My 1997 GS-T did something along the lines of that today. I leave from a stop sign and at about 25 miles an hour the car sputters, backfires, then dies. It will turno over but wont start up. I have no idea what it is. Have plenty of gas. My plugs misfire under the slightest acceleration. Could it be they just stopped working?

Tested for sprak....Have spark

Tested for fuel.......Have fuel


Car still won't start....Please HELP!!!!
 
Ok, so after reading a few posts of people who sound like they have similar problems, some people think it might be the ECM (which took me a couple days to find out is the ECU). How do I check if that is the problem?

Typically, it only takes 3 things to start an engine: spark, fuel, and compression. You've ruled out spark and fuel - check compression next. Typically if the ECU is the culprit you'll be missing either spark or fuel.
 
Ok for the compression test I got

Cylinder 1 .......85 psi
Cylinder 2 .......85 psi
Cylinder 3 .......85 psi
Cylinder 4 .......93 psi

Also when I pulled the number one spark plug, it was damaged like either something hit the prong, or it got so hot that it melted. I'm also not a 100% confident in the compression test. The tester had to be screwed into the head and with the spak plug holes being so far down, I'm not sure if it was tight enough.

Drop a capful of oil into each cylinder and re-run the compression test. If the numbers go up, your rings are shot. Also be sure your battery is fully charged and you're holding the throttle open when you crank it over.

1. Pull the mpi fuse to disable fuel.

2. Disconnect the plug to coil to disable spark.

3. Throttle fully open to supply free flow of air to the cylinders.
