There is a very wierd noise coming from under the car possibly from the driveshaft/transfer case.

It is extremly hard to describe, but when the car is in gear and driving, the sound increases as the cars revolutions do. At about 3k rpm my car sounds like a steam engine from the 'chugging' type noise coming from the car. My dad suggests it is from the driveshaft, and universal joint. He thinks it may have frozen/somehow got damaged from not being driven for about 4 months thru our NY winter [ :( ].

The noise almost sounds like a scrapeing type noise, it is wierd. I can't describe the noise in words good, but as stated above, my car does sound abit like a chugging steam engine when around 3-4krpms.[ didn't rev any higher but it would definatly increase with more revs ]

I havent driven the car in about 6 months, and it hasn't been started in about 4 months. [ had leak with fuel pump assembly and it took forever to get a replacement and then have good weather to install it, so the car was down and not running for those 4 months or so ] .

The noise only occurs when in gear, and increases as the revs increase, so thats why we are thinking it is the driveshaft, and i think it might also be the transfer case. The noise itself seems to be coming from the front center, around the tranny area so its not the engine. [ when in nuetral and revving the car sounds normal ] .

We are probably going to drop the driveshaft sometime hopefully soon[ we will check the Universal joints first as I just read about them in my haynes manual ], but if anyone else has had a similar noise, please chime in with some sort of solution or check.

Could it possibly be the Universal joint just needs some sort of lubrication? damn I want to go look at it, but its 1am and not knowing exactly has me running circles in my head.

P.S. - I havent checked or replaced the transfercase fluid since i got the car 6 months ago [ its only been driven twice in those 6 months, with occasional weekly start ups before the fuel pump assembly went ] Could it be that, or no?

Damn, I want to drive my car for once :( . 6 months of just looking at it.

my car just started to do the same thing today also. Sounds like a screeching/grinding coming from the center of the car. I just did a complete rebuild so I know there is plenty of fluid in the t case.

It could be the carrier bearings for the driveshaft. The rubber breaks down over time and the driveshaft lke to just around. My last Talon had this problem. I could grap the driveshaft and move it up and down like 2 inch's each way. My buddy told me how to fix them by acking them with silicone but I never did it.

I had this happen to me once, the screeching/scraping/rubbing sound that is. But it was a very stupid thing that caused it. I took out my test pipe and put my catalytic converter back on to take emissions test. Well apparently I put it on upside down (don't ask). It looked fine while jacked up, but after lowering it and driving, the edge of the cat was actually rubbing against the drive shaft. Took it out, turned it around, and it was fine.

hhmm, doubt it could be that for me as my cat doesn't look like it has ever been touched before. I'll try to see if there is anything within rubbing distance of the driveshaft thou.

Once i get the car jacked up, I will see if i could move the driveshaft up and down at all.

Should there be any play in the driveshaft at all? And if so how much because I can wiggle my drveshaft around quite a bit.

play as in up and down, or 'twisting play' ?

heres what my haynes manual says for the u-joint.

"To check a U-joint for excesssive freeplay, hold the yoke with one hand and try to turn the driveshaft with the other like this; There shouldn't be any play in the joint, if there is, you need a rebuild or replace it."

Is their anyway it could be coming from the axles, my car has kind of the same problem but my axles are shot so I thought it was coming from those but maybe it is my driveshaft. Which leads me to this question, Will a 1990 3 bolt rear end driveshaft bolt into my 92 4 bolt rear?

Hey gleason,

I just bought a 92 laser awd that is doing the same thing so I was wondering if you had fixed this problem yet and if you did....well, how?

Thanks!!! :D

well, after listening closely, and having my brother drive in cirlces, we found it wasn't the driveshaft. my noise was coming from the front passenger wheel, most likely some brake components scraping, that will hopefully go away after sometime once i get the car road legal and drive it a bunch.

heres the thread with video of the scrape noise, see if it is similar and check to see if your noise is specifically on one side.

Sounds like you have a bad U-Joint..When was the last time you replaced your brakes? It's also possible that the shield behind the rotor is rubbin...Good luck...dan

brake rotors and pads are brand new in that video.

recently my front right wheel 'fell off' [ lower ball-joint let go] , and since the car has been repaired[ lower ball joint, control arm, half shaft] the squeaking noise is gone. I'm guessing it some was crap rubbing on the rotor from the pad...since the car dropped six inches when it slammed to the ground, i think it may have shaken whatever it was.. out.
