hey guys,
I have a 2.0T awd. i'm really about done with this car, its a real pain in my but and i'm losing my intrerest in this engine! well the car has gone threw 4 sets of valves i think ? its bent them so many times i can't remember, but the reason they bent the last time was becuase the tensioner went bad, so we replaced it and after installing the head with all new gaskets and the head being rebiult AGAIN it ran great the whole day! The next day, its at night and we decided to go some where so i start it up and it cranks and starts but stumbles and the idle is jumping round so i give it gas and revs fine but just doesn't seem right.. so after driveing it i stop at my parents house, i park it and let it run and i here this noise. so i pop the hood and i here this slapping /tapping noise comming from the timming area.. so i'm hopeing its not the valves hitting the pistons again, trust me i know what that sounds like! LOL but it didn't seem like that was it and the head was quiet. so my bro takes it home and said it ran fine the whole way home, which is about 10 min. he took it easy on it also.. so the next day i stop by to take a look at it. i go to take a wrench to crank it up to tdc and all that is moving is just the crank! the belt is just poping right over the crank!! so i'm like thank God i didn't try starting it or it would of bin bent valves all over again. so i thought that noise just must of bin the belt slapping on somthing from being so loose. I tear it apart to find that the new tensioner had totaly broke. So i send it back and a week later i get a new one sent to me again, i then install it and put it back together. It seems fine but heres my problem when you rev the engine up to maybe 4k + there is a very loud vibration type sound. Its really anoyeing and won't go away! Its sounded like this before and it went away after getting the head and valves redone, the last time it jumped timming, now its back! is it the valves again ? it runs fine and pools great but it seems like it effects the way it revs becuase i could hit redline before easily now its so loud or a loud vibration i don't want to rev that high. Could someone PLEASE give some ideas ! i just want to be able to drive this car more than a day or 2 before somthing goes totaly wrong! thanks alot... Cory ... i also rechecked the timming again today, everything lines up perfect.

Do you still have the balance shafts installed? Have you verified that they have the correct timing as well? I haven't done any of this myself, but as I understand it they need to be timed correctly and it just seems that monkeying around with the timing belt so much is the perfect opportunity to screw up the timing on those.

And for God's sake, never use anything but the factory tensioner! EVER!!! And one thing they don't tell you is compress it in a vise VERY VERY slowly to put the pin in (like 1/4 turn every 15 sec) to let it settle or you will blow it's seals.

the tensioner is a factory tensioner and it came compressed with a pin in it. the engine still has its balance shafts, they haven't bin messed with tho, they lined up perfect as well.

its anywhere from 4k and up.. it doesn't seem to do it in the lower rpms.. if i can ill try and get a video clip

but the balance shaft belt hasn't bin taken off, and when i bring the engine to tdc it all lines up. guess it wouldn't hurt to try tho

there are two balance shafts yo...

yea you never removed timing belt B, the smaller one which drives the front B-Sahft. but you did remove timing belt A which connects the cams, crank, and oil pump/REAR B-SHAFT....

its called putting it into "phase".. only the rear requires it. the front you just line up the point on the gear.

make sure to look on Vfaq for instructions, there is a bolt on the back of your block, 14mill, take it out and stick a screw driver in it so it goes in all the way (~2inch) youll know cause you wont be able to turn the oil pump sprocket. with the screw driver in all the way and the point lined up, youre in "phase"

took the belt off today and set the oil pump sprocket correct this time.. runs awesome ! runs nice and smooth again, hopefully theres no more bent valves in the next couple days LOL.. thanks alot
