I bought a 95 AWD auto for pretty cheap, had a blown turbo. 60k miles. I changed the turbo and cleaned out the intake.. drove it around for a bit while it choked on excess oil in the exhaust.. then it started running right for a few minutes and developed a knock around 3k

I wasn't paying attention to oil smoke while i was driving it because i expected it, but my oil drain line was leaking like a seive and the feed line was also leaking some, which i'm sure probably didn't help with oil pressure

so tonight i drop the pan and i can feel that #1 and #3 rod bearings are not in good shape (movement in rods)

i slide out from under the car and put my light in the pan, and see a big WTF?

To me, the closest thing this looks like is a bushing out of the turbo, the two pieces almost fit together to make a circle and have multiple oiling holes

i'm going to get the rod caps off in the morning and see if i'll be able to put new bearings in the engine without a rebuild or not, since i'm guessing the oil pressure is what caused the rod bearing failure, although i am kind of not getting my hopes up with this situation since at least two were on their way out.

The main thing i want to figure out is what this is and if it may have been what took out the engine

how the hell did that thing get through the oil filter.

anyway, fit it together and take a pic i think awddsm has got it though, that link proves it.

it's not a valve keeper, it is the size of a turbo bearing/bushing whatever... and has similar oil holes (i've only disassembled 14b turbos)

it was pretty close to the oil return line inlet as well

i just have never seen anything like this.

That is a shaft bearing from the turbo. Here is another thread just like yours. http://dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=137420

It is a good chance that the schrapnel from the blown turbo circulated through your engine and destroyed the rod and main bearings.

That thread made me just shake my head.. everyone is disagreeing with the possibility of what you are saying... trying to say that little thing is from the balance shafts or rods.. then you post a pic of a good one next to the broken one and everyone all of the sudden agreed.

Well, at least my answer is pretty much for sure... i've just never seen this happen and was hoping that bearing couldn't have came from somewhere else

welll out to get the rod caps off and see if the crank needs turned :sosad:

It's looking like i caught the rod bearings in time... there is no visible damage to crank or rod journals so far... i should check more closely but usually i'm able to feel some grooving by the time things have gotten to the point where we need to go to the machine shop

how do i go about checking balance shafts for bearing play? i'm able to very very very slightly move the rear one, but it feels more like it's turning a couple mm's on the pulley, not moving back and forth
